Japan Trip (4) - Kiyomizu-dera Temple

Dec 26, 2012 00:37

With my friends Jiji and Totoro, we’re now up to the peak to visit Kiyomizu-dera Temple.

Kiyomizu-dera Temple's veranda juts out of the side of a mountain and is supported by 13-meter-high wooden columns. The main hall with its distinctive hip-shaped roof of cypress bark rests to the rear of the veranda and houses within it a priceless statue of Kannon Bodhisattva, the goddess of mercy.

People come to the temple to drink water from the falls by collecting it in tin cups; the water is said to have therapeutic properties, and drinking from the three different streams is said to confer health, longevity, and success in studies.

It was a little hard to find but was truly inspiring. It’s a UNESCO heritage site with very beautiful and scenic landscaping. U just wonder how they managed to set up the columns to build the entire temple on the cliff face.

Oh when we were up there, it started to snow, so got to see the place in a different light.
Yes it’s my first snow fall, so it was quite nice, but my exuberance lasted only a while cos I felt it was more like frozen rain! Hahahhahaha

Got some amulets for good health for family etc so I think it makes for a nice gift. I wonder if people collect amulets from all the temples, they got so many different types and some are very intricate.

I think the temple is nice, but hahahha it can be skipped, however the historical district is much more enjoyable. That one was more interesting to me!
