Chapter 3 To Yuya’s dismay, Akihiko had decided to continue seeing Naomi. They’d discussed it at Yuya’s apartment after the date and Yuya had tried to get the dark haired boy to agree not to try to make Kozue jealous anymore.
“But what else can I do?” Akihiko had asked. “I can’t just give up.”
“You should just tell her that you like her before you make things worse”, Yuya told him.
“I just can’t…”
Yuya had sighed and without a word, he left Akihiko and went to bed. He didn’t say anything when Akihiko laid down beside him and he also didn’t say anything when the taller boy embraced him from behind. It would usually make Yuya soften immediately but this time it wouldn’t work.
A week later Yuya still didn’t speak much to Akihiko. The light haired boy had stopped walking with Akihiko to school and he walked straight into the classroom without waiting for Akihiko.
“What’s the matter with your girlfriend?” Sosuke asked Akihiko when he arrived a few minutes after Yuya. “Have you guys broken up?”
Normally Akihiko would take such comments with a smile but this time he snapped.
“Would you just shut up?” he yelled at a shocked Sosuke. “Yuya is not my girlfriend, he never was and he never will be!”
Akihiko slammed his bag down on his desk and sat down, angrily glaring at the blackboard in the front of the classroom. Everyone was looking at him with shocked expressions. Yuya’s mouth was hanging open as he stared at Akihiko’s back; what had that been about?
“What has happened to Akihiko-kun?” Kozue whispered to Yuya who just shrugged.
His relationship with Kozue was kind of tense since Kozue didn’t give up her advances on Yuya even though he always treated her only as a friend. Everything had become so complicated since Kozue arrived to the class. Yuya sighed and ran a hand through his hair, messing up the perfect hairstyle he’d spent a very long time on that morning. He wished that Kozue had never came to his class but then he berated himself for being so unfair. She was a very sweet girl and she only meant well.
The first class of the day began and everyone got something else to concentrate on than staring at Akihiko and wondering about his earlier outburst. Yuya couldn’t focus though and he spent the entire lesson looking at Akihiko’s back, deep in thought.
During lunch break Sosuke tried to approach Akihiko who simply grabbed his lunch and walked out of the classroom. Kozue sat down beside Yuya but he excused himself and ran out of the room, hoping to find Akihiko. He quickly spotted the taller boy and ran to catch up with him.
“Akihiko”, Yuya said, slightly breathless and grabbed Akihiko’s arm.
Akihiko turned his head and looked at Yuya in surprise, “Yuya?”
“What was that about?” Yuya asked. “Before class…”
“I don’t know”, Akihiko said and shrugged. “I’m just tired of him calling you my girlfriend… you’re not even close to it.”
The words hurt Yuya a lot more than he wished to admit. He knew that it was true of course but he didn’t want to hear Akihiko say it that bluntly. Akihiko’s expression softened and he put an arm around Yuya’s shoulders just like he used to.
“You should know that you’re more special to me than a girlfriend ever could be”, he said and looked into Yuya’s widened eyes. “I use girls like they don’t mean anything to me, I get them into bed and then I leave them. You’re the only one that I’ve only slept beside without doing anything and that means a lot more to me.”
Yuya was completely speechless and he just stared into Akihiko’s eyes that were completely sincere. He knew that the dark haired boy actually meant what he had said.
“But…” Yuya’s voice was a mere whisper but Akihiko could still hear him clearly. “You don’t love me… you love Kozue.”
Akihiko blinked, “Of course I love you, Yuya, you’re my best friend!”
Yuya took a deep breath before he spoke again, “But you can never love me the way I want you to love me. My love for you is not the love of a friend.”
The light haired boy freed himself from Akihiko’s grasp and quickly turned around and walked back towards the classroom. He didn’t want to stay and see Akihiko’s reaction; he couldn’t bear seeing the rejection and disgust that would surely be in the taller boy’s eyes.
Yuya couldn’t believe that he’d finally told Akihiko about his feelings. He didn’t know what had compelled him to do it; he just knew that he hadn’t wanted to continue keeping them to himself for the rest of his life. Yuya sat down in his seat in the classroom without saying a single word to Kozue who was looking at him curiously, and began eating his lunch. He had to tell her sometime but he couldn’t deal with it at that moment.
Meanwhile, Akihiko stood rooted at the same spot in the corridor, his lunch completely forgotten. He couldn’t believe what Yuya had just told him. Or he could in fact believe it and that was what disturbed him the most. In a way, he’d always known, with the way that Yuya would look at him or the way the boy would seem hurt every time Akihiko got a new girlfriend.
“This is bad”, Akihiko sighed and buried his face in his hands, the lunch falling to the floor and spreading over it in a big mess that reflected Akihiko’s feelings.

Yuya didn’t speak to anyone for the rest of the day. He hadn’t been surprised when Akihiko hadn’t showed up for any classes after lunch. Kozue had asked him what had happened but Yuya just shrugged and wrote some notes about what the teacher was telling them.
His thoughts were all jumbled up and he knew that he’d probably ruined his friendship with Akihiko forever. It felt awful of course but at the same time it didn’t feel as bad as he thought that it would. Now he didn’t have to pretend that he was something that he wasn’t and he didn’t have to carry the secret about his sexuality anymore. He could show who he was without worrying about what Akihiko thought about it.
Yuya had never been concerned with what his classmates or any other people would think; the only one he’d worried about was Akihiko.
When school ended for the day, Yuya grabbed Akihiko’s bag since the dark haired boy had left it there. Yuya didn’t know why but he had a feeling that Akihiko would be waiting for him in his apartment; he’d given a spare key to Akihiko once. Maybe he’d be waiting there to say goodbye…
Yuya dragged his feet behind him on the way home and he stood staring at his door for a long time before he finally pushed down the handle and opened the door; it was unlocked.
“I’m home”, he said softly as he took off his shoes and Akihiko came out from the living room.
“Welcome home”, he said and looked at Yuya with an expressionless face.
“What were you doing all afternoon?” Yuya asked in a tone which he hoped was light and walked into the kitchen to start cooking for them.
“I went to see Naomi at her school”, Akihiko replied and sat down at the kitchen table.
“Oh”, Yuya started chopping carrots with more strength than needed.
“I told her that I can’t see her anymore.”
Yuya stopped chopping but he didn’t turn around to look at Akihiko, “Why?”
“I… I guess that I’m tired of using people”, Akihiko said softly and Yuya turned around to look at him.
They looked into each other’s eyes for a long time till Yuya nodded slowly and turned back to continue chopping the carrots he was going to use for a vegetable soup. He was smiling slightly; maybe things would be okay after all. There wasn’t anything uncomfortable about their silence; it was as things always had been.
“I won’t tell Kozue that I like her though”, Akihiko continued and Yuya raised an eyebrow.
“Why not?” he asked and started peeling an onion.
“I don’t think I’m in love with her after all, she just reminded me of someone.”
“I see.”
They didn’t say anything else as Yuya finished making the soup and they ate it sitting on the couch watching some random television show. Their legs were brushing against each other and when they finished eating and put their plates on the table, Akihiko then leaned his head on Yuya’s shoulder.
“Thank you”, he said softly and Yuya glanced down at his face questioningly.
“For what?”
“For loving me… even though I’m a bastard that only care about myself.”
“That’s not true”, Yuya said. “I believe that you care for me and you’ve always protected me… and you have a lot to think about with your family and everything.”
“Remember when I told you that they don’t want me to spend time in your apartment?” Akihiko asked and Yuya nodded. “It’s because they were convinced that I was gay and in love with you and so they forbade me to come here.”
“Really?” Yuya was surprised; he hadn’t expected that.
“I don’t get along with my parents at all… they drink and fight all the time and they never give me a moment’s peace. They always tell me how worthless I am.”
“You’re not worthless”, Yuya said and embraced Akihiko who hugged back and snuggled close to Yuya.
“I’ve always liked you because you’re so caring and you cook for me and wash my clothes”, Akihiko mumbled. “You’ve done everything that my parents should’ve done.”
“Then I guess that you see me as a mother or something”, Yuya said and smiled sadly.
“Not as a mother”, Akihiko looked into Yuya’s eyes as they sat so close to each other that their noses almost touched. “I already told you that I wish that you were girl so that I could marry you… To tell you the truth, the only reason I ever wanted Kozue was because she reminded me of you.”
Yuya stared at Akihiko in shock; he couldn’t believe what he was hearing.
“But she doesn’t even come close to the original. I realised that today.”
“You’re not gay”, Yuya said. “You’re not even bisexual.”
“I know”, Akihiko leaned his forehead against Yuya’s and Yuya could feel hot breaths against his lips. “I know but… does that matter?”
“I guess not”, a smile tugged at Yuya’s lips and Akihiko’s hands snuck down from his back and settled on his hips. “I don’t do anything before the first date.”
They laughed and enjoyed the feel of each other’s warm breaths against their faces. No one was going to destroy their happiness now.

“Kozue-chan, I need to talk to you”, Yuya said as school was over for the day.
“Okay”, Kozue said with a wide smile and she followed Yuya to a secluded corner of the schoolyard. “I already know what you’re going to say.”
“You do?” Yuya frowned and Kozue laughed.
“You’re going to say that you’re not interested in me”, she said. “I’m not completely stupid, you know. I always knew who you were interested in but I decided not to give up until the very end.”
Yuya blinked and stared at Kozue; so she’d known all along?
“It was kind of obvious with the way your face lit up every time you talked about him”, Kozue smiled. “And the way you always focused on him no matter what I did. It’s okay really, I understand. He is a very charming boy after all.”
“He really is”, Yuya said, smiling happily. “Thank you for understanding.”
“Naomi was very sad because of it though…”
“I’m sorry about that; Akihiko’s got an ability of not thinking properly sometimes… or all the time.”
Kozue laughed, “It’s okay, she’ll get over it soon enough. She’s always got at least one admirer that’s willing to do anything for her.”
“That’s good, I guess…” Yuya scratched the back of his head.
“You should go now, Akihiko-kun is waiting for you”, Kozue said and nodded towards Akihiko who stood a bit further away, looking at them.
“See you tomorrow”, Yuya said with a bright smile and turned to run to Akihiko.
“Yeah, see you tomorrow”, Kozue mumbled with a sad smile.
When Yuya approached him, Akihiko opened his arms and gave Yuya a big hug.
“How did she take it?” Akihiko asked as they started walking hand in hand.
“Apparently she’d known all along”, Yuya said. “I’m not as good at hiding my feelings as I thought…”
“I guess that I’m just dense for not noticing them”, Akihiko smiled sheepishly.
“It’s okay because I love you anyway.”
They smiled at each other and then looked at the sun that was setting in the distance. No matter what hardships they would face when it came to Akihiko’s parents and the future, they would make it through. Nothing could destroy their precious bond.
