Summary: Jin had always been different from the other people in the small town but he had no idea why. Struggling with feeling unloved and strange, he only had his childhood friend Kazuya. One night a creature enters his life and changes it forever, revealing things that he'd never imagined could be real.

Kazuya slung his backpack over his shoulders and stepped out of his house, locking the door before he headed to the store. He had to put up a sign that said that he was going on a short vacation. The townspeople would probably frown at the sign and wonder where someone like Kazuya could go on vacation but he wouldn’t be there to receive their scathing gazes anyway.

Jin could be extremely far away by now as a couple of months had passed but Kazuya thought that he had an idea where the older man was. The more he thought about it the more it seemed to make sense in some twisted way. Jin had said that he hadn’t met a Kiba that time but why would he suddenly ask about them if he hadn’t? Considering Jin’s fascination for dark places and for slaughter, Kazuya thought that it had to be something more to it. He also thought that there had to be a reason to why everyone avoided the dark forest so much.

Sighing, Kazuya unlocked the backdoor to the store and entered. He looked around and shuddered, the place seemed much creepier when it was dark and he was alone. If the place he worked could look so scary during daytime he didn’t even want to think about how scary the dark forest would look. But he had to try and if he hadn’t found anything within a couple of days he would go home again.

Using some tape he stuck the newly written sign onto the front door and then left, making sure that everything was in place and that the doors were locked properly. As always, he was either given weird looks or just plain ignored by the people he passed by on the street.

Wind tousled his hair and gripped his clothes when he stood at the edge of the field, looking at the ominous forest in the distance. Actually it didn’t look very scary, it was beautiful, but the promise of what lurked between the trees made it much more frightening. Logically Jin shouldn’t be alive if he’d really met a Kiba and then gone with it to the forest but there was something special about him and Kazuya just knew that he was alive.

Taking a deep breath, Kazuya started walking over the field, struggling against the strong wind. It hadn’t seemed that strong when he was in the shelter of the buildings in town but out on the field it could play as much as it wanted and make the long grass practically lay down. Sometimes he’d snuck to the field to play together with Jin when they were kids but they’d been severely scolded when they’d been discovered by their parents one time. Kazuya smiled slightly at the memory and at how Jin had tried to take the entire blame for it back then even if it had been Kazuya’s idea.

A twig snapped under his foot when he entered the forest and was once again shielded from the stronger wind. Birds were singing and everything seemed really peaceful with the sunlight streaming through the trees’ branches. Kazuya had no idea where to search for the older man so he closed his eyes for a moment and when he opened them again he began walking. He decided to let his instincts guide him instead of thinking about where he was going which would be quite useless during the circumstances anyway.

He didn’t know for how long he’d been walking when his stomach growled and he decided to take a break, sitting down on a large stone and taking out sandwiches and a bottle of water from his backpack. It was getting considerably darker and even though he tried not to think about what might happen in the forest during night-time he was scared. Perhaps it hadn’t been such a good idea to search for Jin after all but he knew that he couldn’t stand just waiting for the other to come back anymore.

“Jin, where the hell are you?” Kazuya mumbled and the only answer he got was birdsong and the gentle sounds the tree branches made when they swayed in the wind.

Finishing his simple meal, he got up and started walking again. For all he knew he could have been walking around in circles as everything looked the same to him but somehow he knew that he was going deeper into the forest. The sunlight couldn’t seep through the branches that well and the birds that had chirped so happily in the edge of the forest were a bit more silent here. Overall the atmosphere was a bit more eerie and almost suffocating as he continued walking and evening approached.

When the light was almost completely gone, he decided to stop for the night and pulled out the blankets he’d brought with him, spreading them out on the ground beneath the sheltering branches of a large spruce. Pulling two of the blankets over himself, Kazuya closed his eyes and tried to pretend that he was at home in his own bed. It wasn’t until he pretended that Jin was there with him, holding him, that he could fall asleep.

In his dreams the innocent embrace he’d imagined turned into something else entirely. Jin’s hands roamed over his body and their lips and tongues met in a passionate kiss. Kazuya could practically feel the pleasure that the older man was giving him even if it was only a dream. Through the entire dream Jin had been gentle but now he was suddenly tightening his grip around Kazuya’s arms, making them hurt.

“No”, Kazuya gasped and opened his eyes to stare into a pair of red ones.

At first he was too shocked to react but then he screamed and struggled to get the creature off of him, managing to get away after a vicious kick to a sensitive place. Kazuya struggled to get on his feet, starting to run away when suddenly the red eyed creature stood in front of him again. It looked mostly human but it was dirty and naked and the red eyes were practically glowing.

“Don’t try to run from me”, the creature showed its fangs in a taunting smile. “You won’t be able to get away.”

“Don’t hurt me”, Kazuya whispered and backed away when the creature approached him. “Please, don’t hurt me.”

His entire body was trembling in fear and he knew that in the end he couldn’t win against the thing that was moving towards him at a slow pace. He knew that the creature was only toying with him and otherwise he’d already be dead. Finally he was unable to back away more as his back was pressed against a large oak.

“Why shouldn’t I hurt you?” Jae asked, revelling in the fear coming from the human in waves; it had been a long time since he’d had the chance to kill a human.

Kazuya had no reply to the creature’s question so he could only stand there, his legs shaking as he watched the other with fear in his eyes. No coherent thoughts had room in his brain, only the instinct to run but that was overpowered by the realisation that he’d never be able to escape anyway. Because of his desire to see Jin again and the foolish decision to try and find him he’d made sure that he would never see the older man again. He wouldn’t be able to see anyone ever again.

Jae gripped the human’s upper arms tightly, smiling when the man winced and struggled against his grip. He’d always enjoyed hunting and killing perhaps a bit more than the others of his kin and he didn’t do it purely for survival. He enjoyed seeing his preys’ fear before he killed them and perhaps that was why humans were the best victims. They were so emotional, close to tears when they realised that they were about to die.

“Jin, I’m so sorry”, Kazuya mumbled and closed his eyes tightly, waiting for death to come.

That name made Jae stop right before he was about to sink his fangs into the human’s neck. So this human knew his cousin? He almost giggled with glee and excitement; someone was going to get a little gift outside of his burrow. It would be difficult sneaking there with a body to carry and right before dawn but it would be worth it. With that thought Jae sank his fangs into the human’s neck and the pain made the man scream.

Jin had almost gotten completely used to his life among the Kiba and they now hunted together as a group; Tatsuya, Meisa, Koki, Ryo and Jin. It was almost as if Jin was a replacement for Jae in the group but it seemed like they all agreed that Jin was better company even if he wasn’t as fast or skilled as his cousin was. Normally it seemed like they would accept any Kiba but Jae was an annoyance to them because of his habit to play around with the prey instead of just feeding and getting it over with.

Even though Jin had to admit that there were some definite advantages to living among the Kiba he still missed things like human food and showers. He hadn’t made his final decision yet however as he still needed more time. Glancing at Tatsuya, who was running beside him, he thought about their... partnership.

During their months together they had learnt to live with each other and Tatsuya had taught Jin a lot of things while Jin had told Tatsuya more about what it was like living like a human. They lived in sync with each other and Jin found that it was actually really easy to be around Tatsuya. It was true that they were very compatible but Jin could still not feel any love towards the other, only respect. They weren’t lovers or even friends; they were just two beings who were made to coexist with each other.

Jin’s thoughts were interrupted by a scream further into the forest and he frowned as the scream was somehow familiar. He knew that it belonged to a human at least and the thought of a human being harmed didn’t sit right with him and he sent a desperate look to Tatsuya who nodded.

“Guys, we’re going there”, Tatsuya said and pointed to the direction the scream had come from and the small group steered towards it.

Jin strained himself to run even faster than he’d done before, wanting to reach the human before it was too late. As they came closer to the source of the scream, the scent of blood filled his nose and another very familiar scent. Jin’s eyes widened when he saw Jae pressing a human into a tree while feeding from him.

Rage made Jin growl in an inhuman way and before he could have another clear thought he pounced on Jae and ripped him away from the human who collapsed to the ground with a weak moan. It wasn’t until then that Jin got a good look at the man and his heart almost stopped when he realised who it was.

“Kazuya”, he gasped but before he could go to the other man’s side, Jae attacked him.

Jae’s claws made deep wounds on Jin’s cheek but he could barely feel the pain because his worry for Kazuya was stronger than anything else. He couldn’t focus on fighting his cousin but he didn’t have to because Tatsuya and the rest of the group came to his rescue. They easily overpowered Jae who growled in frustration and tried to get away.

Jin instantly went to Kazuya’s side and inspected the wound on the younger man’s neck that was now bleeding freely. He cursed and gently cradled Kazuya in his arms, lifting him up and then turned to the others. Meisa, Koki and Ryo were holding Jae down while Tatsuya stood a bit in front of them, facing Jin with a serious expression.

“Let me carry him”, Tatsuya said. “I’m faster and the others can take care of Jae.”

A bit hesitant Jin nodded and carefully laid Kazuya in Tatsuya’s arms and they began running towards town together. Behind them loud screams could be heard as the three others ‘took care’ of Jae. Tatsuya had practically ordered them to do it even if he’d only said it as a statement to Jin. The Kiba had ordered a killing of one of his own for Jin’s sake because of the fact that he was upset about Kazuya being hurt. It didn’t really make sense.

It really didn’t take as long time to run into town as it would have if Jin had been the one carrying Kazuya. They ran to Jin’s house and he fumbled under the doormat to find the key and unlocked the door with shaking hands. Kazuya had made no sign of still being alive after the faint moan when Jin had ripped Jae from him.

“Lay him on my bed”, Jin said and pointed at the door to his bedroom before he quickly went to the bathroom, needing to wash quickly so that he wouldn’t make Kazuya’s wound dirty and cause an infection.

After a second thought, he went to the living room and grabbed the phone, calling an ambulance before he returned to the bathroom. He got undressed and finally removed the bandage that Kazuya had wrapped around his hand a couple of months earlier before he’d left; he didn’t really know why he’d kept it on but it comforted him somehow. Then he stepped into the shower and quickly washed off the worst of the grime before he got out and put on his bathrobe, grabbing the first aid box and running into his bedroom. He’d done everything in superhuman speed so it hadn’t taken him that long.

Tatsuya had grabbed a sheet from the bed and pressed it against Kazuya’s wound to stop the bleeding. Jin smiled gratefully at him and sat down at the edge of the bed, opening the first aid box.

“How is he?” he asked worriedly and looked at the blood on the sheet that Tatsuya was still pressing against Kazuya’s neck.

“I don’t think that Jae had the time to drink much but he’s still bleeding”, Tatsuya replied. “You should take him to a hospital.”

“I called an ambulance and it’s on its way”, Jin grabbed a large cotton swab and tape and when Tatsuya had moved the sheet away he pressed the swab to the wound and taped it in place. “You should probably hide when they get here.”

Everything seemed so surreal; he was at home in his own bedroom with Kazuya lying on his bed but the situation was so wrong. What had Kazuya been doing in the dark forest anyway? Why wasn’t the ambulance coming any faster? Sure he knew that the townspeople were deadly afraid of going outside when it was dark but the medics had a god damn responsibility. He didn’t know how long time had passed when he heard sirens in the distance and he didn’t know when Tatsuya had left his side either.

When they came inside to get Kazuya, Jin wanted to follow but he was only in a bathrobe and they wouldn’t allow him to anyway. He answered their questions about what had happened with a lame story about how they’d been outside and a wild dog had suddenly appeared and bit Kazuya but he could see it in their eyes that they didn’t believe it. They were afraid. He watched as the ambulance sped away and he felt numb.

Please let him be okay.
