Kyle followed the green glow of Guy's flightpath almost on autopilot, weaving around massive tree trunks and holding a shield in place ahead of him to brush aside dangling vines. The forest canopy was so thick it blocked all sign of the Sintik camp from above. The undergrowth was both thick and encrusted with ice, making it almost impenetrable. So dodging tree trunks it was, for hours, because you couldn't fly at top speed through trees, and the truce had put the two armies four days' march apart. With time thrown in for negotiations, they always had to make third of the flight in the dark, the green ring light bouncing off all the ice and distorting the apparent shape of the landscape.

Sintik encampment 100 meters ahead, the ring chimed softly.

"Thank God," Kyle muttered. He dredged up another burst of speed from somewhere and pulled up next to Guy just as they touched down in front of the sentries.

The soliders were getting used to them; instead of a face full of arrows, they got a pair of partially drawn swords. After a moment the sentries let their weapons slide back into the sheaths, but they still waited until Guy waved his hand and said, "Aktekslibslib. Or whatever. My accent is for shit." before they let them in.

Despite the long flight, despite the late hour, they went directly to the Sintik General's tent to meet with him and the negotiator. Debriefing was getting faster, thank God, as the two Generals learned what they would and wouldn't report about the enemy and the Negotiators learned where each other's boundaries were.

At long last they were released to their tent. The Sintik had provided cots, but after the first night Guy and Kyle had folded them up, set them aside, and made a pallet piled high with blankets on the rough canvas 'floor'. They crawled into it before releasing their protective auras, but Kyle still let out a huff of surprise and burrowed closer to Guy. His breath fogged the air.

Guy rubbed a hand briskely up and down Kyle's back. "It's just not right for it to be this cold without snow."

"Rain can hardly get through that canopy, much less snow," Kyle said into Guy's neck. His lips brushed Guy's skin, warmed by Kyle's breath.

"It can make sense and still seem wrong." Guy pulled the blankets higher and squirmed down into their nest. Kyle had to surrender the warm pocket he'd made in the curve of Guy's neck, but Guy's body was radiating heat, so he didn't mind too much. He leaned his forehead against Guy's and slipped a knee between Guy's legs instead. Guy went back to rubbing Kyle's back, slower this time. "We shoulda asked for a heater."

"Sign of weakness," Kyle said, draping an arm over Guy's hip. He could feel the steady rise and fall of Guy's chest against his. Their breathing started to syncronize. "Besides, I'm not sure they have any. This is a pretty average temperature for this continent."

Guy blew a puff of air right into Kyle's face and grinned when Kyle sniffed in surprise. "Next shore leave, we're going somewhere warm."

"You always want to go somewhere warm." Kyle shifted the arm he wasn't lying on so that he could curl his hand around Guy's shoulder. Better.

"Yeah, well, there's a reason for that. Beaches, beers, and bare skin."

Kyle smiled. "I don't know. This isn't so bad." They were so close that all he had to do to kiss Guy, lightly, was purse his lips.

Of course, Guy closed the last little bit of space to kiss him more intently after, but then he went right back to leaning his forehead against Kyle's. "Desert," he said. "Warm in the daytime, cold at night. Best of both worlds."

Kyle snickered. "Guy Gardner, master of the compromise."

"Hey, they assigned me a diplomatic mission, didn't they?"

"You play very well with cultures that value bluntness."

Guy poked him between the shoulderblades. "I can be devious."

"Deviant, maybe," Kyle fought down a grin.

Guy snorted. "If we weren't mummified by blankets, I'd show you deviant."

The grin broke free. "I'll take a rain check."

Guy sighed dramatically. "We have got to wrap up these negotiations."

Kyle tugged the blankets closer around them. "Sleep first," he said. "Batter two armies and their governments into submission in the morning."

"Yeah, yeah." Still, Guy let out a long breath and his body relaxed, settling more solidly against Kyle.

Eyes drifting closed, Kyle turned his attention to the steady thump, thump of their heartbeats. Sleep stole over him before he could figure out which rhythm was his and which was Guy's.
