Facebook and LJ...what to do?

Sep 02, 2010 09:22

This LJ-Facebook thing is making my head hurt. I can't figure out what to do about it. I know you folks must be sick of seeing posts like this, but I at least have to lay the issues out clearly for myself, and maybe someone reading will even have a helpful comment ( Read more... )

But I've been thinking: why would anyone post a comment to an LJ post and then crosspost it to FB? The post itself wouldn't show up, would it?

I don't think the post, would, no, so it would look kind of disconnected. It would answer a lot of questions, I think, if we knew what the cross-posted comment looked like on FB. Does it link back to the original comment? If so, then that's a problem. But it could still be an issue if they mention a username or a link in their comment, both of which happen all the time.

I know that a lot of people love all the interconnectedness, but when you have multiple identities online, it gets really tough to manage. :-(

The post doesn't show up, but sometimes, the content of the comment can be all the is needed, or in some cases, could cause question. For instance, if I were to complain about my boss in a post here on LJ, and someone were to reply "That Boss, I don't blame you for hating her. From everything you've said, she's just a bitch!" Crosspost that to fb and really, no post is needed to make life miserable.

As I said in my own LJ, I think it's pretty assinine to only allow comments to post to fb, but a) this is LJ we're talking about here, and from this and previous events, they aren't exactly the sharpest crayons in the box b) I don't want to give them any ideas.

I agree with the folks who say to give LJ a few days before doing anything drastic. There has been quite a lot of unhappy from folks about the cross-posting bit, even from non-fans, and several suspect that there will be some changes. I suspect those changes will be only to prevent comments to locked posts from being posted to fb, but you never know.

I'm not sure how friending folks and creating filters exclusively for posting would an issue? You might have two sets of filters, one for posting and one for reading. As long as you make identically-named filters on DW, it should be a problem, neh?

We'll see what LJ does, but I'm not that hopeful. :-( If they just prevent comments to locked posts, that still won't solve things for me, because the whole point of my fannish posts is for people--on LJ, not FB--to see them.

As long as you make identically-named filters on DW, it should be a problem, neh?The separation of Access and Subscription on DW makes this more complicated but... *thinking hard* So what I'd have to do is mutually friend everyone on LJ to give them reading access. Then I'd have to create two custom groups: One for everyone to give them reading access, and one for folks I don't mind seeing more private posts. Then I'd have to create a filter so that I only see the folks on my f-list that I want to see ( ... )

Give it at least a few days before doing anything. I've been on LJ for four years and I can't tell you how many times they've done something, people get all up in arms, it dies down, and we wait for the next kerfluffle. ;)

Everybody always threatens to move to DW and that's cool, but most of the time people cool off and they're still here. :)

I'm not moving. I have three comms here and you can't import them to DW. All my links are here under LJ. Not fixing eleventy billion links, thank you.

See what happens before you make a decision. :)

I won't do anything drastic right away, but I suspect that in this case "dying down" will equal "accepting that we have no control and hoping it doesn't come back to bite us in the ass later". That's what happens most of the time.

I actually moved to DW months ago, not because of a kerfuffle, but because they keep adding features I like, and LJ hasn't improved in ages, just gotten more irritating. What I'm contemplating now is just how much I'm going to need to lock down this journal, since I do still interact with people here.

One option is to stop cross-posting and just make a sticky post and direct folks to DW. I know I'd lose a lot of people that way, though. I'd really like to keep interacting on LJ, but LJ itself just keeps making things more difficult for me.

Ah, well, of course you must do what makes you feel comfortable. I'd miss you lots if you moved! :)

And you're right, no control is probably what will happen, but I'm still going to wait and see. I expect nothing from LJ, and I'm rarely disappointed. ;)

I am also super-invested in not having any detectable link between lj or dw and fb (the rapid-fire deployment of acronyms amuses me), and so I am pleased to report that there's apparently a way to at least hide the crossposting ticky-boxes in your own journal (so auto-crossposting could still happen, but not case-by-case crossposting).

Details here and here, if you're interested. I originally saw this in carolinecrane's journal.

Unfortunately, that fix only works if people are viewing your journal in your own style. If they are viewing it in their journal style, it doesn't help. :-( Given that I always view other journals in my own style, I suspect the fix has very limited utility.

I hope they fix this, it's making so many people unhappy.

I hate the thought of someone posting a comment to a f-locked entry of mine and it appearing on facebook or twitter where everyone can read it and possibly know what was in my post. It sucks. :(
