You're right: life is about making decisions. Sometimes good ones, sometimes those "what the hell was I thinking" ones... but I like to think they all build our character. Everything makes us the person we are, and we'll never know what would've happened had we not been through these things. it doesn't mean it hasn't been for the better good, though, no matter how bad the situation was. Who knows, had your co-worker not made that fateful decision, it could have impacted the world in a negative way.
Still, some things in life can be changed: can be improved on. Who says you couldn't still become an architect? Who says your life has to be the same? You're never too old for anything; this I firmly believe. As long as you look at flaws, you fail to see the possibility of what can be. No, you're not exactly like everyone else. No one is. That's what makes this world so interesting: everyone's different. Embrace the differences, as well as the decisions you've made, and march onward... *huge hugs*
