I'm Liz (in case you couldn't tell by the username), and I am incredibly glad that I found this community. :D I literally just started writing this, and any feedback at all would be extremely helpful. Obviously, it's just the beginning, but I'm not sure where to go from here...

More than anything, she loved his eyes. His eyes were cold and icy blue, but they warmed her more than anything. No, it wasn’t warmth… It was heat. This heat revived her from the death of her daily life, restored her heartbeat… It made her damaged soul whole again, and filled her up until she could no longer contain herself, until she wanted to sing and scream and burst.

His name was August, like the month, and he was dying.

Hospitals had always frightened her, with the stench of sickness wafting lazily through the narrow hallways, and over the blank, indifferent, white walls… When she was a little girl, her mom had been in a hospital just like this one. She could still see her mother laying there in that crisp, neatly groomed hospital bed, staring tiredly at her daughter, helpless.

“Ms. Kolinsky?” The shock of the nurse’s sharp, high voice jolted her back to reality. Her mother was already dead. Her mother had been dead for years. August… August was dying here. “Ms. Kolinsky, are you okay?”

“Yes… Yes, I’m fine, thanks,” she said, not quite believing the words. Her own voice sounded foreign, far away. Nothing felt real anymore.

She walked into his room shivering. “You came,” he said, his deep, smooth voice nearly bringing her to tears.

“I came,” she said. “How could I not?”

Silently, she stumbled to his bed…and laid her heavy head on his chest, where she could hear the drumming of his heart. Soon it would stop.
