Anime Rec and General Babble

Saw Star Wars with my friend. Um. First Star Wars movie I saw in full. I thought the political plot would be more complicated than a couple of separatists and an evil chancellor. Maybe Anakin's descent to darkness was covered in Episode II, because it seemed entirely too rushed in this one, and I don't think I handled the fact that Padme was the whole reason he turned bad at all well enough. Then again, the recurring theme in life seems to be that love is stupid anyway, so that was a reinforcement of belief, an affirmation of sorts. Um. I'm clearly not coherent enough for a proper commentary. :|

Shall rec a fic instead.

REC: (In which I wax poetic and am clearly quite out of it)

Title: Saint
Author: Ruaki
Fandom: Weiss Kreuz
Summary: saint, n. A dead sinner revised and edited. (Ambrose Bierce, The Devil's Dictionary)
Review: Despite what we may claim about brilliant writing and all other standards that are the basis of what we end up reading, we all have certain ships, certain storylines, and certain characterisations which will never get too old or too overused or too cliched for us to read. The unrequited love triangle is mine, and years after I first encountered fanfiction, virtual ages past my forays into the anime fandom and after having moved on to HP fiction, Saint definitely still has a special place in my fandom heart.

I can't exactly say which in it is beautiful for me. It is, for the most part, plain and unadorned in language and, in first-person, it isn't even in a point of view I like reading about. But the characters are clear and visible and there are scenes that stayed with me long after I've put the fic down and read plenty of others, such as the part in which Ken is kissing Youji and Youji doesn't want to open his eyes because Ken might disappear if he does. There it is, the hope of having love returned, in that one scene. It's all hope and not and despair and desire and teasing and it's just, also, sad. Overall.

But really. I love how Youji wanted Ken, how Ken wanted Aya, and how Aya was just Aya. It's as simple as that. There are other fics (in Gundam Wing though, and Wufei-->Duo-->Heero in the leads) that have followed this formula and I've loved them too, but what I love especially about Saint is how it stays true to character to the end, among other things.

So, you know, read this if this sort of story's your sort of story. And if it is, why don't you rec me unrequited love stories too, because MAN, the world needs a lot more of THOSE. In fiction, at least. ;)

(I'm not sure if people unfamiliar with Weiss Kreuz will know what I'm talking about, or will be interested in reading, but give it a try anyway? The basic gist is that Youji, Ken, Aya and Omi are assassins by night, flower shop boys by day. Each of them has some sort of past. Youji was a detective whose partner, Asuka, was killed. Ken was a soccer player who was framed and whose reputation and viability as a player went down with him.)

type: rec, type: slash, type: rare ships
