EPISODE 13: A HEART UNSWAYING ON THE WATER’S SURFACE (PART 1)

• The significance of Kirsi’s inability to appreciate the impact of emotions on her actions - in this case, the music she’s playing - is so sad knowing that she’ll “lose” much of her emotional capability later.
And also, if she forces herself to smile so that the goodness in her heart comes out - being able to see that manifest itself later… THE FEELS! We really get to see the goodness in her heart, the love in her soul, come through later. Laweggjpwajglwj!!!
• One thing that peeves me a bit… we have to assume the Kirsi’s been blind her whole life since they don’t do anything to suggest it was the result of a particular event or disease or whatever. So the fact that she knows what ‘silver’ is “without even seeing it…” She’s NEVER seen silver. It sounds beautiful and all but it’s such an obvious detail to neglect in both the subs and dub. *sigh*
• I love the fact that Kanami is in tune to the mediums. Especially because Kanami is portrayed with a more laid back personality, perhaps even a bit of a party girl (in her youth, anyway) but she’s particular sentimental in her interaction with beings that other humans regard as less than human. It’s nice to see a deeper sense of purpose in her, that she’s engaged in her career not just as a job but in all that it entails.
• I can’t help but think of Yin when Kanami says that mediums cannot dream. Even if they don’t dream, perhaps they can reflect on their past on their own. The episode presents a catalyst in Yin’s case: a newspaper article detailing a plane crash. But I’d wonder if she’d never thought about or remembered her past.
• I have to reiterate, Gai and Kiko are way funnier in the dub!
• In the Japanese script, -- speaks of Yin more objectively, as a doll, an “it.” In the dub, he refers to her as she (when explaining that she’d be in shock at losing her specter and would be wandering around the city)
• I don’t like the dub’s alteration from “It’s kind of girlish though” to “I wouldn’t write like a teenage girl.” They don’t convey the same thing at all and truthfully, I don’t think there’s anything ‘teenage’ about what he’s written - and, my personal opinion, rhyming can add immaturity to poetry if you’re not already a strong writer.
• “Don’t worry, you’ve got a pretty common face.” Gets me every time!!
• Here’s one of the places where Eelis’ little speech about the impact of emotion comes into play! Kirsi cannot see the interaction between her mother and Eelis, but she can feel it in the room. It’s noticeable; a vocal silence louder than any words.
• Since the specter is not originally her own, I wonder what the connection is post-transformation, that it feels like to her to be without it or to be called by it…
• In all the chaos - Hei rescuing Yin is just so beautiful to me! Because he doesn’t have to, and it’s not the rational choice, and especially considering without her specter and her present ‘state of mind’ (if you will) there’s not a whole lot of reason to save the humanity lurking in the both of them; the rule that governs them even though they themselves (as well as everything affiliated) believe that that aspect of their souls has been expunged. Especially in light of Hei’s speech differentiating himself and Mao as Contractors from pathetic, cowardly humans like Huang. Sure, talk it up Black Reaper.
• Yin expressing a personal desire. It’s obvious why they chose to end the episode like that, but even though it’s obvious, you can’t ignore the power of the statement and the contrast between its significance and her delivery - so firm yet dispassionate at the same time.
