BLOGGING PSYCHO PASS: Beware Fans of Titus Andronicus

(Episode 6: Return of the Psychotic Prince)

The irony of the title of this episode is that at this point Makishima doesn’t even seem that bad. He’s granted people the means to commit crimes, but he’s just watching them exact strangely perverse and unique wills. He’s not doing anything particularly demented at this point. And Ouryou Rikako makes me horribly uncomfortable. This was even before it was largely hinted that she’s the killer. It should be “Psychotic Princess”

But let me do this in order.

Even knowing what I know I have a hard time believing that cloudy psycho passes are genetic. So screw you, chief lady!

Alcohol. Clearly it is still easy to come by if Masaoka and Kagari are able to buy it (or at least have it, since they never specify where it came from). But it’s still such a rarity that Akane doesn’t even know what it is? (and by that I mean that she knows what alcohol is but can’t identify it or what it’s for - I mean, she asked Kagari if it was juice, then had to make sure it was for drinking and not fire breathing, so…) How odd is that though? Everybody is so afraid of becoming addicted to it (thereby endangering their psycho passes, I presume) that it’s virtually nonexistent? Wow… can any of you imagine a world without alcohol?
On that note, it also doesn’t make any sense that Akane wouldn’t get drunk. People who don’t start drinking until later in life are lightweights. (that coupled with my tiny body -ok, and the taste - is why I won’t drink - yes, it’s also illegal, blah blah). She barely even knows what it is and has certainly never drank it before, but can down it without being affected? Weird.

So when I first watched this episode, I didn’t totally understand Shion’s explanation of the Specimen Case. Specifically the part where she talked about the specimens being hidden beneath an environmental hologram. This time around I realized too that I had just missed the part (at the end) where they remove the fountain holo before finding Rikako’s “artwork” beneath it. Now it makes much more sense, linking the two. One thing I will say is that comparatively, Rikako’s art is nicer to look at than the old specimens.

But I love when Akane apologizes for asking about the Specimen Case while Yayoi is eating, and Shion kind makes that reminiscent comment about Yayoi liking violent/passionate things. Yayoi quickly changes the subject back to the case when Akane gets uncomfortable. Shion <3

Rikako is a freak. I don’t quite appreciate how being beautiful and smart nullifies her extreme freak factors. She’s completely open about her abnormality too. Most people have to hide things like that about themselves to fit in with the real world. These girls’ defenses are wayyyy down.
For starters… Titus Andronicus? It is fine to appreciate it as a piece of literature but a passionate fascination with it to me just seems vulgar. And to recite lines from it with pleasure. Maybe it’s only extra weird in her case because she’s already weird but… gross. Personally I have not read Titus Andronicus but I did a wiki search to read a synopsis for this post and… it’s upsetting. I can’t even summarize the plot for you guys in a general way because so many different things are going on but this is my best attempt: Titus does some shady, self-serving things that move the Queen of the Goths (Tamora) to seek revenge on him. Which leads to some other revenge type things. And then more revenge type things. It’s a bloodbath. In particular though, Rikako talks about Lavinia, Titus’ daughter. As part of the revenge, Tamora’s two sons and her “secret?” lover take Lavinia into the woods and violently rape her. Then to keep her quiet they cut out her tongue and cut off her hands. Later she’s able to write the names of her attackers in dirt with a stick held between her teeth (which leads to all that added revenge). At the end of it all (or almost end) her father kills her - her death is somewhat of an honor killing. I don’t have much respect for honor killings even as a part of other cultures because it typically has something to do with “Well you brought shame on our family, so die.” (I’m speaking horribly generally so nobody get touchy). And… how is that fair? Most especially in Lavinia’s case since she obviously did not vote to be raped. HOWEVER, I kind of changed my mind about her death when Makishima asked Rikako if she thought Lavinia was glad to be freed of her violated body. It changed the perspective a bit because really, what a miserable life she must have lived after that happened to her. It is these little wisdoms (that are almost sympathetic) that make me have such a difficult time with my feelings for Makishima. Anyway anyway…

What really threw me off was… that girl (whose name now evades me) is crying about how her step father is stressing her out always leering at her and going through her things, and Rikako’s therapy of choice is to start telling her about a girl who was violently raped because of terrible things her father did, and then was later killed by her father. That’s not comforting to hear, is it??

Lastly, all that grotesque art. She sits there sketching it in the middle of the room for anyone to waltz in uninvited and see…whatever the hell that is. And seeing as the school is trying to protect young girls from cloudy Psycho Passes… why is no one concerned? :(

I almost feel as though Kougami came to the conclusion that Makishima had to have been involved too quickly. They prepped us for it with the little flashback at the beginning of the episode but otherwise… It works, don’t get me wrong, it just felt like all of a sudden he was linking this case (we have hardly any evidence in) to this dark moment of his past. Oh well. I’m just too needy, haha.

Episode 7 hopefully by Wed. This is where this series starts to become difficult to watch…
