So Buy a Program and/or a Hat

Jan 05, 2010 18:53

Hello, 2010! I hope you are all alive and well.

I was going to post a blow-by-blow of the road trip to Guaymas, but now that I think about it, it doesn't feel like there's a whole lot to tell. We ran around looking at things a lot, and I got petted by an old woman at the flea market, and the neighbor's mastiff punched me in the face with her teeth. Zoe and Jerod seemed to have a fun first time in Mexico and I got to see Daddio for the first time in a year, which was rad. I read 2.5 books on the trip, 1.5 of which I've read before (Jpod, Anthropologist on Mars, and The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down). Dad lent me Out Stealing Horses and The Corrections to read, and Mike's mom was sweet and gave me a Borders giftcard with which I can buy even more books. I'm thinking about getting my own copy of Riddley Walker and/or The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down, and maybe Day of the Triffids since the library only has an audiobook version. And thus yet another post devolves into talking about books. Woo.

Instruction started today but for my (hopefully) final quarter I've only got classes M/W/F, so I've spent the entirety of today since 1pm sitting around and catching up on the internet. Tonight the household is apparently going to go see The Princess and the Frog, since Z, Subrina and I haven't seen it. I don't think I've gone to see a movie in theatres since Mike and I went to the UOP showing of District 9, so I'm looking forward to it. Sometime this week I've got to hit Comicopolis and probably the Literary Guillotine to get books for class; tomorrow's going to be a busy day but for now I'm just kind of floating.

I guess since I'm wasting time anyway, I'm gonna do that year's-end meme thing that Zoe posted, although I can't promise that it won't be wholly boring.

01. What did you do in 2009 that you'd never done before?
+worked an internship
+quit an internship (hurr)
+made a (really delicious) cake from scratch
+bought alcohol (although it was only a bottle of marsala for cooking...)
+got into a car accident
+got a speeding ticket and had to take traffic school
+learned to read Middle Egyptian
+learned some German
+gave an enema to an old man (my life, she is so exciting)

02. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I'm not sure I made any resolutions for 2009. My main resolution for 2010 is to get a job in a publishing house, even if it's just answering phones.

03. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Not that I can think. My stepsister had her second child, but I've never met her as she lives in North Carolina.

04. Did anyone close to you die?
Again, not really. Although a patient I had over the summer, Dal, died of cancer after my stint with him was over. As did Jessica's bunny Kanin.

05. What countries did you visit?
Mexico, again. I'm pretty predictable (although if things go right I will be able to add Germany to the list for 2010).

06. What would you like to have in 2010 that you lacked in 2009?
A full-time job. And a unicorn.

07. What date from 2009 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
One particular date? Heck, I dunno. The day of my first car accident, maybe?

08. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Getting a second part-time job and a temporary internship, I guess. And taking those two classes that put a Hieroglyphs intensity on my Modern Lit degree.

09. What was your biggest failure?
For one, completely blowing off NaNoWriMo. That was pretty lame, even if I was as busy as 3.63 beavers. And for saying I was going to exercise and ride my bike way more and then sitting around like a lump.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
I was actually sick an alarming number of times this year, looking back through my journal. Also, that dog punching me in the face with her teeth.

11. What was the best thing you bought?
Maybe the ticket to see that Monsters of Accordion show, or the JoCoSho? Or the Tufesa ticket for Mexico? I feel like I rarely purchase things. Or, ooh, my awesome Avenue Q poster of Rod that says "I am NOT a closeted HOMOWHATEVER!"

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
Man, all my friends were great to me through 2009. And Mom's been killer supportive through all the big and small things, with Dad there to provide much-needed irrelevance.

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
Appalled? That's a pretty strong word. I guess the dorks who stole the jack-o-lantern on Halloween. Basically any of the folks who ruin a good time for other people due to their own selfishness.

14. Where did most of your money go?
Rent, bills, food, insurance, gas. The usual. Plus a small allotment for books and shows.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
The JoCoSho, the trip to Mexico, basically all my classes last quarter. Learning that Mom wanted to take me to Germany for a graduation present. (Still excited about that.)

16. What song will always remind you of 2009?
Basically anything from Ben Folds' album "Way to Normal." Perhaps most strongly "Cologne" or "Hiroshima (B B B Benny Hit His Head)."

17. Compared to this time last year, you are:
+more of a codger
+poorer
+better at writing papers
+a better cook?

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Riding my bike, definitely. And writing, oh my god writing.

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Being a procrastinator and lazytard.

20. How will you be spending/did you spend Christmas?
Spent Christmas day with Mike, alternately visiting his mom and her friends and helping him clear stuff out at his dad's house in preparation for his eviction.

21. Did you fall in love in 2009?
Well, I was already in love I guess (eww, cooties), but that feeling did fluctuate up and down a good deal over the year. Young love, alrighhhhht.

22. How many one-night stands?
None as such, although I did sleep with TeeTee and Giraffe when Mike wasn't there.

23. What was your favorite TV program?
Flight of the Conchords, definitely, and Dexter. I haven't watched a whole lot of new TV recently, but Mike and I have been replaying The Simpsons randomly and watching (for the first time, for me) Star Trek: The Original Series, so I guess that counts.

24. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
I have less patience with the world in general, sadly, but I wouldn't say I hate too many people.

25. What was the best book you read?
Ooh, toughie. I'll ignore the great books I reread and count the first-timers. Riddley Walker, no doubt. I would do runners-up but that could take all night.

26. What was your greatest musical discovery?
Ben Folds hits the top of the list, definitely. Also Mark Growden, as well as Paul and Storm.

27. What did you want and get?
A new apartment, for one thing. (Ha. Ha. Ha.) Also some rockin' nice boots and a mortar and pestle. And a wok! And a laptop that works. And a visit with my mummy and my daddio. Really more than I deserve.

28. What did you want and not get?
A unicorn.

29. What was your favorite film of this year?
Oh shit, that's a toughie. District 9 was up there. If we're counting movies that didn't come out in 2009, then I'd say Attack the Gas Station! and Big Man Japan for just sheer Asian-movie craziness. And Hedwig and the Angry Inch because that shit is great.

30. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I turned 21, and it was kind of a small birthday because I was up in Stockton. I went with some friends to Micke Grove Zoo and then we watched 200 Pounds Beauty. And I got a wok!

31. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
The first apartment not being so problematic, and the internship not being so...dissatisfying, I guess.

32. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2009?
Heh, I dunno. Comfort, I guess. Skirts and tank tops in the spring and summer, and pants and long-sleeved stuff in the fall and winter. Although I've been dressing up occasionally when I randomly feel like it.

33. What kept you sane?
Cooking, hanging out with friends, dicking around on the internet, and venting, mostly. ALSO AXE-MURDERING MY ENEMIES

34. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Oh lordy, so many. Lee Pace, Michael C. Hall, Mark Growden, Amanda Palmer.

35. What was your favorite video game of the year?
I'm not a big gamer by any means, but I really dug the first Professor Layton game. I'm super excited to play the second one now!

36. Who has made the most cameos in your dreams this year?
My dreams don't really have connections with each other and mostly consist of people who don't exist.

37. Who did you miss?
Mostly my mom. I know it's dorky, but I hate not being able to see her as often as I would like. I missed basically everybody over summer, being stuck in SC mostly alone.

38. Who was the best new person you met?
Probably Shawna, the awesome kickass TA from German Lit. I'll probably never see her again but she made that class infinitely amusing.

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2009:
Just because someone's your boss doesn't mean they aren't a total fucking moron.

40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:
"Says here an astronaut / put on a pair of diapers / and drove eighteen hours / to kill her boyfriend. / In my hotel room / I'm wondering / if you read that story too / and if we both might / be having the same imaginary conversation."

Altogether 2009 was a very emotional and, sometimes, stressful year, but I'd rather call it a good year than a bad one. I'm hoping both for new and exciting things in the coming year and more stability overall, but I guess it's my job to make things stable, and myself as well. We'll see what I can do with myself.

Ah, me. That killed some time.
