2011: when supanova got awesome

Feb 09, 2011 00:33

As a Sydney-sider and Australian I've been attending the Supanova line of conventions since May 2004 in Sydney (and Brisbane in 2008 and 2009)

In past years, the guests have been alright, but nothing that ever grabbed my attention. I attended the cons because I'm a nerd who like to dress up and be silly.
Whatever guests attended was never my focus.
Then came 2010. Last year when I went to the UK I despaired over the guests Supanova got while I wasn't in Australia and just knew that 2011 would be back to the type of guests I wouldn't be interested in seeing.

I was wrong.

Supanova has out done themselves this year, so much so that for the first year ever I want to go to all 4 conventions this year: Melbourne, Brisbane, Sydney and Perth.
With the official announcement made for Sydney and Perth guests made today, I can start getting proper excited now.. and start planning things.

MELBOURNE:
Reasons why I want to go:
SIMON PEGG AND NICK FROST!!! TOGETHER!
Two of my favourite people in the world and it's the only con they are doing in Australia. I also love Melbourne, and I haven't been back there since 2007 and I miss it.
Reasons why I probably won't go:
Money (it's always the reason) I know no one in Melbourne I can stay with so I have to pay to stay somewhere, plus air fares, food, etc... unlikely D:

BRISBANE:
Reasons why I want to go:
Christopher Llyod is going (Doc from Back to the Future) so I wouldn't mind seeing him, but as far as guests go, I'm not too fussed about this one. The main reason I want to go is to see my Brisbane/Queensland friends and also with no guests stalking to be done, I can cosplay properly. Plus I have been offered a place to stay from one of my friends.
Reasons why I probably won't go:
As long as I manage to score cheap air fares I could go, since I have a place to stay I don't have to pay for... but at the same time, alot of my Brisbane friends come to Sydney Supanova, I'm not too interested in the line up and Brisbane in April is horrid and humid, and if I don't go, I could possibly go to Melbourne instead.

SYDNEY:
Reasons why I want to go:
Where do I start. For one, it's my home town, the convention is held 20 minutes away from where I live.
Guests include Morena Baccarin, Cary Elwes, Gareth David-Llyod and James Marsters (so far, more will be announced) and because GDL is coming, so are alot of my online Torchwood friends, from all over Australia and a few from the UK as well. It'll be too awesome to get to hang out with fellow Doctor Who/Torchwood nutters again because it's been far too long.
Reasons why I probably won't go:
None. Not unless shit hits the fan. :D

PERTH:
Reasons why I want to go:
Pretty much the same as above. Perth have the same guest line up as Sydney does, but I want to go to be able to spend more time with my Torchwood friends and do more stalking. Plus, I've never been to Perth before, so I wouldn't mind visiting the city as well.
Reasons why I probably won't go:
Big money issue. Perth is far away, hence the airfare is alot more expensive than going to Brisbane or Melbourne. I don't know anyone in Perth, so again no where free to stay and I don't really 'need' to go.
It would be nice to do it all again 1 week after Sydney, but I really don't have the money to do so.
If I get a job it might be on the cards.

It all sounds so exciting and awesome but I really can't afford to go to any cons save Sydney this year. I can't afford to fly interstate when I'm trying to pay back my parents and save to go back to the UK.
But I think if I manage to score myself a job this year, I will go to one or two interstate cons (trusting I can get the days off) and I'm learning towards Melbourne because well... when do you ever get to meet Simon Pegg AND Nick Frost in the same place at the same time? :D
