Ok, I have heard all kind so idiotic statements about what the Bible does and does not say. Some of these inane comments have been in regards to prop. 8, some have been in reference to other things. BUT today I heard 3 people (2 live , and one on TV) site their reasons for or against something based on the Ten Commandments. None of the things ( Read more... )

Careful, Christian. There are multiple versions of the Ten Commandments depending on one's denomination. Don't go being absolutist on an issue that's interpreted in multiple ways. Your list doesn't match mine, for instance. According to Luther's Small Catechism:
1 You shall have no other gods...
2 You shall not make wrongful use of the name of the Lord your God
3 Remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy
4 Honor your father and your mother
5 You shall not murder
6 You shall not commit adultery
7 You shall not steal
8 You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor
9 You shall not covet your neighbor's house
10 You shall not covet your neighbor's wife [or stuff]

We won't even go into the exact translations of the three Biblical versions of the commandments, either (Exodus 20, Exodus 34, Deuteronomy 5). There's lots of slop room for various lists in different churches. Now, if you want to bitch about people listing things that are not on ANY of the lists, knock yourself out.

Exodus 34 is pretty near a completely different set of commandments. How many Christian denominations keep to the rules of passover as required by Exodus 34:18, as a start...

Entirely! Hence them being referred to as the Ritual Decalogue (as opposed to the Ethical Decalogue in Ex 20 and Deut 5). And even then, the Ethical Decalogue contains about 14 or 15 depending on the translation.

Frankly, if we're going to go with the New Testament version of religion, Christ narrowed it down to "Love the Lord your God" and "Love your neighbor as yourself"

There's a couple of significant variants on the 10 commandments, but you have to look to Paul (aka, the Apostle who doesn't really seem to understand the messsage of Love) to connect homosexuality with anything in the standard 10.

Lots of fun with variants on the 10, really. Heck the Catholic version, as I understand it, does away with #2 and splits #10 into two to make up for it.
