I got tired of the CDs in my car so I turned the radio to NPR today. No news is good news....
Here are some of the top stories I listened to/watched/read about today:
"Coretta Scott King Dies at age 78"
Martin Luther King Jr's widow died in her sleep. I admire this woman's strength and perseverance. King, who will always be remembered MLK's widow, was in her own right a strong leader of the civil rights movement and advocate of peace.
I have to say I am in awe of King’s courage. She boldly continued to spread her husband’s message after he was assassinated. Just three weeks after MLK was killed, Coretta delivered the speech at an anti-Vietnam rally her husband had been scheduled to speak at. Today I heard a clip from this speech and listened as she eloquently called for an end to the war. She said that none should rest until the last gunshot was fired. In the years since MLK’s death Coretta Scott King remained a leader in the struggle for civil rights. She was vocal in her support for gay rights and her opposition to the Iraq war.
"Alito sworn in as nation's 110th Supreme Court justice"
I'm not too excited about seeing the delicate balance of our Supreme Court is now shifting to the right. What really scares me is that Bush still has two more years to nominate justices.
"Ex-postal worker kills 5, herself at mail center"
All I can say is that this is proof that you should always be nice to your mail carriers and work really can drive you to insanity.
And then there's my personal favorite of the day:
"Bush: U.S. must kick oil addiction"
Hmm...I loved hearing these words come out of Dubya's mouth: "America is addicted to oil."
Oh really...Yep according to the Pres, all is good and America but we need to stop relying on Middle Eastern oil. I also found it interesting that he mentioned the "Temporary Worker Program" that would grant legal status to undocumented workers, who would pay taxes, be required to return to their home country after three years, and receive no special preference if they decide to apply for permanent citizenship. Hmm...so we'll have a neverending supply of low-wage workforce. Sure, we can use them for a few years and then send them packing back to whatever third-world country they came from...trade them in for a newer model...It's a sickening thought to be sure...but genius.
I would like to speak more of this but I just noticed that it's 1:15 am and I have to get up in about five hours. I should get some sleep.
More on this tomorrow if I feel up to it.
