last night was a quick dinner at the
harley davidson cafe. one wall (approximately 40' by 60') was made of hundreds of huge, thick chains that hung from the ceiling and were painted to form a massive american flag. a huge 30' harley was bursting out of the wall out front of the cafe, and they had about 10 bikes hanging from a motorised track that went around the restaurant. like everything in vegas, this was way over the top, but made for an interesting atmosphere.
afterwards was
KA, cirque du soleil's current show at the MGM GRAND hotel & casino (one of about 4 shows the group is currently performing in vegas) with my sister lindsay. i have never been to a cirque show before, and i highly recommend it to anyone. seriously. if you have the opportunity, go see them. you won't be disappointed. from the actors that greeted us at the door, to the antics they performed while everyone was finding their seats (my sister was especially picked on because she is cute), and the show itself, i was completely in awe for the entire 90 minutes. the set, which consisisted of about 18 treehouse-like towers off stage surrounding a black abyss in the middle of the theatre was phenomenal. the black abyss allowed for 4 different platforms to be lifted into the air, the most astonishing was after a shipwreck, the entire stage was covered in sand. the next scene took place at the bottom of a mountain, so the platform lifted, flipped horizontally so all the sand poured off, and then twisted vertically so i was staring at a 60-70' wall in front of me, painted to look like the side of a mountain. the main characters were being chased by archers, and arrows were being shot at the mountain and getting stuck, so they ascended the huge wall by climbing the arrows. the archers chased, and soon there were 10 people climbing the wall, still being shot at, and falling to their death, down the wall full of arrows, and eventually off the end and into the black abyss. this entire scene was my favourite, and completely overwhelming. i couldn't believe i was actually seeing this happen. when people "died" they fell through the spaces between the arrows all slowly and slinky (sorta like
this game). this was just one incredibly amazing scene out of many, not to mention the music, the scenery, the acting, the costumes, and the make-up! the skill involved in all the marial arts and acrobatics is also worth mentioning. actors were flying all over the theatre! i couldn't help but think to myself (having played a little too much civilization recently) that las vegas must have the largest cultural score in the world. :P
on the way back to the hotel after the show ended at midnight, lindsay and i went to an oxygen bar in New York, New York which was an intensely relaxing experience, albeit overpriced. i'll try anything once...
i haven't gotten around to playing at a hold'em table yet, but i think that may be tonight... seeing as it is our last.
i have to quickly mention the hotel (we're staying at
Mandalay Bay/THEhotel) - our room has two bathrooms. one when you walk in (in the hallway that leads to the living room, complete with a large plasma screen tv, couch, chair, desk, and bar). the other off the huge bathroom attached to the double bedroom. i have never been in a hotel so lavish. oh, and there is a beach. a huge beach with real sand and a wave pool. surrounded with palm trees and ancient-looking buildings. i think i could get used to this over-the-top-ness, even tho i have a bit of sunburn, hehe :P
my parents are taking me to dinner at an incredibly fancy restaurant, one that i've lusted after for years since hearing about the chef and proprietor on foodtv.
AUREOLE houses a 4 storey glass
wine tower in the centre of the restaurant, and "wine angels" fly up and down on cables to retrieve the wine. seriously.
i have been yearning to get away for awhile, and this is exactly what i needed. i am relaxed, uplifted, and ready to come home and get back to real life.
