Slightly starstruck and inspired :)

So as any Radford student knows, we had a completely overdone inaguration and symposium on "Women's Leadership in a Global Society," today. It's been absolutely ridiculous how much money and time has been spent in just preparing Preston for the symposium. But it was really a great conference. I wish I could have understood more of it - I couldn't hear everything from backstage. But I do know I got inspired to do something great.

I love my job, by the way. Besides the actual work, we sometimes get to meet some really cool people. First I met and chatted with Ms. Holton (the "First Lady" of VA) and took her to the non-shady bathroom over in Martin hall. Then what was really amazing was getting to talk with Dr. Maya Angelou for 10 or 15 minutes. My job during the symposium was to pull the curtain back to let people in and out of the on-stage party area. So I happened to be right by Dr. Angelou while we were waiting for the sympsium to start. And we had a great conversation about family names (she was fascinated by mine), Renissance music, classical guitar, and some of the countries she's taught in. It just inspired me by how completely down-to-earth she is! I felt truely honored to get to talk with her, one on one, for more than a "hi, nice to meet you," kind of affair.

The only one I didn't get to meet was Dr. Sadat. I feel like she's a truely amazing woman as well. And it's amazing how far a couple with a simple mission - a free Egypt, and peace in the world...can go. Honestly, how many people say they want peace? How many become world leaders and sign treaties that make the first step?

I'm just inspired to follow through on my last post. To make my dreams a reality. To learn everything I can and apply it.
