Summary: Johnny is a drifter. Mary wants to drift with him. He makes her an offer.

Mary met Johnny in the university's coffee shop. She sat alone at a table and Johnny sauntered in his tight jeans and tee shirt that emphasized his wide shoulders and trim waist. When he asked to join her, she looked up into his wild blue eyes and tumbled into love.

He was not her type, not at all. His jet black hair hung straight much too long as it brushed and curled at his collar. Though it was near noon he sported a five o'clock shadow. He thrust out a large hand and she felt the calluses on them as he said his name was Johnny.

They made small talk for an hour and though she had a lecture to attend; instead invited him to her apartment for dinner. He stayed, moving his few belongings from his beat up old Ford truck into her place.

For the next year to the shock of everyone who knew her they were seen walking the campus and surrounding areas hand in hand.

They were happy with Mary going to school during the day while he worked odd jobs. Her apartment and bills were paid by her parents who were horrified in the man she chose but wisely accepted him with the hope Mary would come to her senses or get tired of Johnny.

Though Johnny loved Mary after a year together he knew the battle with his itchy feet to roam was being lost. So one night after he took her to dinner they parked outside their apartment. They sat on his tailgate. She was nuzzling his neck and talking about running away together. Johnny was puffing on a cigarette and just wondered 'How am I gonna say goodbye?'

He took her hands and looked into her eyes, “Listen Mary, you got it good here. You don't need to mess with a guy goin' nowhere.”

She cocked her head and said, “How about Oklahoma?”

He stood up, sighed and shook his head, “Ain't you been listening? It's never gonna work out for us. I think it'd be a good time for you to just to let me go. God knows you don't need me. You'll do better on your own. Can't you see I'm not good for you, baby. I'll just end up breaking your heart if you come with me. Just let me go.”

He recognized the stubborn tilt of her chin and tried again, “Other than a dreamer, I ain't nothing but a drifter. You could do much better than me.” Unable to stop himself he leaned over and he kissed her. “You're on your last year of college. You've got good parents that love you and me I got ninety-seven dollars and this old 2005 beat up Ford truck so let me go. You don't need me. Stop holding on to me, honey the way you are. Can't you see I'm no good for you. Please let me go,” his voice broke and he pressed his forehead to hers.

Mary leaned back, “You done. Nice try. You can't hide behind telling me what's good for me by acting so bad. I don't think that you're so tough. I just think you're scared of love and anyway I won't take up that much space. So you let me go and take me with you, Johnny. We both know I belong where you are. I think you are not as strong as you think you are. Don't you know I am so good for you, Baby. If you leave me it's only gonna break your heart. So let's run away."

Johnny closed his eyes and wrapped his arms around her tight, “How about this darlin, I'll make you a deal. I'll head out and be back in a year. You finish up college. Go out and live a life. Make friends with strangers. Don't just hide outta site. I'll be back in a year, the day you graduate, and if you still want me, we'll both run away.”

Mary started to argue, but Johnny kissed her right fast, “This is the only option darlin, or I'll be outta sight so fast.”

Mary turn her head, stared out into the dark, she didn't want him to leave without her. She didn't want the to be apart, “I guess I'll do it your way, if it is the only choice that I've got. But if you don't come back for me, you know you'll break my heart. I'll be here waiting, every day of that year. I'll be missing you something awful, and probably living in fear, that you'll find some other girl, while you are out on the road. Realize I'm nothing special and you'll never come back. But I'll finish school, and that day I graduate, you had better be there with me, and ready to take me away.”

Johnny smiled sadly and settled back down next to her, “I'll be back before you even notice that I was gone.”

They sat in silence wrapped around each other for the rest of the night. Come morning Johnny packed up a couple bags and headed out in his truck with one last kiss goodbye. Mary let the tears fall as she watched him drive away, hoping that he meant it when he said he would be back. She closed the door once he was out of sight, already starting to count down the moments until he would return.

Mary didn't really like it but she did what she had promised. Her family had been thrilled when she had told them Johnny headed out, believing that their daughter would finally come to her senses. She worked hard at school, and made a few new friends. Went to some parties and never closed herself off and hid. But every single night on the table by her bed she'd look at picture of her and Johnny, wish him a goodnight, and mark of another day on her calender counting down to Johnny’s return.

As her graduation grew closer, Mary grew more and more anxious. She was excited and terrified, wondering if he really would return. When the day finally arrived she had her apartment all packed. She was ready to go, trusting that Johnny would return. As Mary stood on the stage with all the other graduates she desperately searched the crowd for a glimpse of Johnny's face.

When the ceremony was over, there still hadn’t been a glimpse of Johnny. She closed her eyes and headed home, believing he had to be there waiting for her. Though when she got there, he still wasn't anywhere to be found. So, she sat in her car, and waited, knowing that he had to be there soon.

As evening began to fall she still refused to move, waiting, hoping, that Johnny would show up. Just as she started to fall asleep there was a tap on her window. Startled she looked up, smiled, and quickly climbed out of the car, “JOHNNY!” she shouted.

“Missed me darlin?” Johnny said as he leaned in and kissed her.
