Chapter II: Diverged

Finishing his drink accompanied by the stars, Junsu kicked his aluminum can down the pathway leading to his home. Suddenly, he felt a presence behind his back. Within a second, someone had a strong arm around his neck and another around his waist, pulling him backwards. Junsu had no time to scream as he felt cold metal settle itself on the skin of his neck. Junsu struggled as hard as he could, but he could not fight off the assailant. Then a leering voice whispered in his ear, “Kim Junsu, give me all the money you have now or I will leave your dead body in front of the Kim mansion for your family to see by tomorrow morning!”

Junsu’s eyes widened in shock. No, no, no! He bit the man’s hand forcefully and with a cry of pain, the man released him. “You son of a bitch -” Without looking back, Junsu started to run, but his foot was caught and he was flipped over onto the dirty ground, the breath knocked out of him. “Kim Junsu, you will pay for this!” The man raised his knife.

Junsu covered his face with his arms to defend himself. Then he heard a voice shouting, “Let him go!” and instantly, the man was knocked off him to the side, his knife grazing Junsu’s arm, leaving a cut. Junsu stood up, holding his arm and wincing from the pain. “Micky!” He called out gratefully. Yoochun came to stand in front of him, checking his injury. “It looks deep. We better get you to the hospital.”

“No! I can’t let my father know - I mean - I can’t let anybody know or my father would think that I’ve been out fighting on the streets again.” Junsu lied, averting his eyes.

“Alright. Here.” Having experienced getting all kinds of injuries himself and being unable to pay for the medical fees, Yoochun felt sympathy for Junsu. He tore off a piece of cloth from the end of his shirt and bound it tightly around Junsu’s arm. Junsu could not keep his eyes off the person in front of him, who was so gentle with his every move, afraid of hurting Junsu. From the bottom of his heart, he felt admiration for the man before his eyes.

Behind Yoochun, however, the mugger was stirring, knife in hand. His hand was shaking, but his intention was clear. Junsu’s eyes widened as he raised the shining knife, and -

“Micky, watch out!” Junsu pushed him sideways to avoid the weapon, causing himself to fall heavily on top of Yoochun. He felt his face heat up at their close proximity.

“Micky, watch out!” Yoochun felt a strong push on his chest and he fell backwards, unable to stop Junsu from falling on top of him in a heap. He could feel Junsu’s hot breath on his face. A tremor of need ran through his body involuntarily and his fingers reached out in a bid to feel the warm skin on the tomato red face. However, the moment was broken as the assailant attacked again. Yoochun hurriedly tucked Junsu into his arms and rolled them away out of harm’s reach. With a powerful kick to the gut, Yoochun managed to send the man flying backwards. Then, grabbing the other’s hand without much thought, they fled into the night.

The cool night wind blew past Yoochun’s face as they ran on, with him still gripping Junsu’s hand tightly.

“I - Oomph!” Yoochun could hear Junsu’s heavy pants behind him before he felt a strong tug at his hand and he tumbled over with Junsu in a heap of arms and legs. Lying still to catch his breath for a moment, Yoochun felt soft hands checking him over. “Micky, are you alright?” Junsu’s voice was urgent and shrill with panic.

“I’m fine.” Yoochun sat up slowly, bringing a smile on his face as he saw Junsu’s concerned expression. He had a strong urge to protect this man in front of his eyes, who looked vulnerable and emotionally-scarred. The sadness was plain in his cool eyes from the first time they met that night, in the convenience store which he worked at. From his mannerisms, Yoochun could tell from a glance that he was from a well-off family, yet … The constant sense of withdrawnness could not be masked from his young, unlined face. Yoochun felt curious about him, but he felt it wasn’t the right time to ask.

To his surprise, Junsu let go and lay down beside him on the slightly damp grass, not caring about his clothes.

“… Xiah? What are you doing?” Yoochun could not help himself from blurting out.

“I’m looking at the stars. See how bright they are tonight?” Junsu pointed. He had always loved stars, even as a child, he would paste glow-in-the-dark stars all over his ceiling, just to make him feel like he was lying freely under the night sky and not just confined to plain plaster. To Junsu, stars were just like him - they were always one on their own, in a confined space, surrounded by many others. He longed to be the brightest star in his own sky, admired by someone watching him.

Joining Junsu on the ground, Yoochun raised his head slowly to the star-filled night sky. Oddly, he felt a mixture of tranquility and disorientation settle around him. The bright yellow stars seemed to twinkle mischievously under his stare. Feeling his eyelids grow heavy, he allowed unconsciousness to take over his body as he heard Junsu murmur, “Sleep, Micky -” and a warm arm tuck itself around his shoulders.

The sound of a bird chirping awoke Yoochun to a bright sunny morning. Stretching, he realised the presence of a warm body beside him. Yoochun sat up tentatively, trying not to wake Junsu. Looking back, he realised that he had been lying on Junsu’s good arm the whole night, using it as a pillow. A wave of guilt washed over Yoochun’s mind, but the silly smile that had unknowingly grew on his face hinted at a certain tenderness that he had for the boy.

Yoochun hurriedly looked away as Junsu stirred, his mouth opening automatically in a yawn and his arms stretched out before he winced slightly. The movement brought Yoochun to his side in a flash. “Does it still hurt a lot?” Yoochun touched the slight-stained cloth covering Junsu’s wound.

Junsu blinked sleepily. “Not really.” Then his lips stretched into a small smile, “Good morning, Micky.”

Yoochun could not help but grin back, “Good morning, Xiah.”

Reaching the street that led to his mansion, Junsu decided not to let Yoochun go on with him any further for fear that he would find out his true identity. He stopped in his tracks and turned to Yoochun. “Thank you for all your help, Micky.” Junsu fused his tone with gratitude, grasping Yoochun’s hands in his briefly.

Yoochun could not help but feel a tingle at the man’s warm touch. “You’re welcome.” He replied, feeling a little dazed.

“I’ve got to go … It’s been nice meeting you, Micky.” Junsu’s eyes held longing and regret. “See, that’s the problem about Fate … I don’t know if I’ll ever meet you again, but,” Junsu stroked one of Yoochun’s hands gently, “I know I won’t forget you. You were the first kind stranger to me without any reserves. Thank you for being my friend.” Junsu smiled genuinely and turned away, hoping not to let Yoochun see the sadness that filled his warm brown eyes again. But Yoochun held on to his arm. “What do you mean, you won’t meet me again? We’re friends, right? We can still meet in future.” Yoochun did not know why, but he felt agitated.

Junsu shook his head a little sadly. He knew his father would be in fits just knowing that he had sneaked out, let alone finding out about his friendship with Yoochun, a stranger whom he had just met for a few hours. “You will know why, Micky. You will find out soon. Goodbye.” With that, he left a dumbfounded Yoochun staring after his departing shadow.

Unlocking the door to his cheap and rundown apartment, Yoochun pushed open the door to find a sleeping figure on the couch, the sound of his snores making loud reverberations around the living room. Striding up to the couch, he poked the sleeping man in the arm and whispered loudly, “Yunho, stop the snoring or you’ll wake my mother!” Yunho snorted a little and opened his eyes, semi-consciously. “Tell me again who was the one who kept me waiting for the whole night?”

Yoochun looked guilty. “I’m sorry. I was just caught up with some matters after work.” Yunho sat up and looked at him mischievously. “New girlfriend?”

The image of Junsu floated into his mind immediately. “No way, man. I’m too busy to accommodate time for a girlfriend.” Yoochun felt his cheeks flaming up, but his stomach and heart sank at the thought of not seeing him ever again. He had yet to solve the mystery about Junsu and he hated leaving ends untied like this. Yunho could sense disappointment radiating from Yoochun and decided wisely that it was best not to probe into Yoochun’s emotional affairs. Sinking down beside Yunho, the latter handed him a plastic fork and the cheesecake slice as he promised. “Here you go. Eat away your sorrows. Dig in!”

Doing as his friend said, Yoochun sank the forkful into his mouth and savoured the taste slowly, swirling it around his tongue. It was a rare treat when Yunho brought cheesecake for him and Yoochun had loved it since the very first time he tasted such a delicacy. “Oh good lord … This is delicious!” Yoochun exclaimed. “Thank you, Yunho.” When there was no reply, he looked beside him, only to find that Yunho had once again collapsed face down on the couch, fast asleep.

Chuckling quietly, Yoochun lifted the sleeping Yunho and helped him to his bedroom.
