Chapter I: Touched

Dinnertime at the Kims’ had always been an elaborate and extravagant affair; the boys had to be dressed in their best suits and behaved properly like the gentlemen they were expected to be, never a clatter in their cutlery, stain on their napkins or bursting out into loud laughter; but polite smiles and conversation and stiff, proper mannerisms that suffocated them. The atmosphere would always be laced with tension as old Mr Kim talked about mundane company matters while they listened, trying to consume the food beneath their tongues and yet not tasting it at all. Junsu even found himself starting to hate dining with his father as he always ended up losing his appetite totally and feeling more pressurised at the thought of more work to do.

I’m just twenty-one, for god’s sake, and Jaejoong’s only twenty-two. We shouldn’t be doing this; we should be enjoying our youth out there, dating pretty chicks and playing soccer every day. Junsu never ceased to have thoughts like these ever since he matured into the man he was.

At least, tonight, his mother was out playing golf with her friends or she would be picking on his silence again.

A sound of laughter made Junsu look up from his plate abruptly.

Staring at the laughing Jaejoong, Junsu knew that he had entirely different thoughts from him. Kim Jaejoong - the perfect man, son, and brother to anyone who knew him. From his pristine appearance to his astounding capabilities in the company, he was a personal favourite adored by the media and their father with his clean public figure and never-ending wit and humour. Everything about Jaejoong was loved - others loved him, he loved them back as well. He loved his family, his job, his colleagues, his friends … Junsu knew very well that some few million girls were even crazy enough to set up a fan club just for the sake of stalking him under the pretext of being fans, hoping one day that they would have the chance to catch him outside their luxurious mansion or even inside, smoking a cigarette on the patio beside the swimming pool, clad in nothing but a pair of boxers. Junsu shook his head and sighed to himself.

“Junsu-ah, have more chicken. They’re your favourite.” The velvety voice of Kim Jaejoong sounded in his ears. Nodding quietly, Junsu accepted the dish with a murmur of thanks.

“Junsu-ah, so how has the deal with the Lee Holdings been going?” His father turned to him.

Squirming a little, Junsu answered softly, “It’s going fine. I’m still discussing the details with Eunhyuk.”

His father nodded gravely. “Junsu-ah, it is essential that we clinch this deal so as to expand our relations. As you know, the Lee Holdings is very prominent in China, Japan and Malaysia, so we must seize the chance to work with them, or be eliminated by our contemporaries. Do the best you can. Otherwise, if you need help, you may ask Jaejoong to take over your role.”

Junsu nodded mutely. He could not help but feel a slight sense of disappointment and envy in his heart. Everything he had done was overlooked, and his abilities were doubted; while the rest of the world revolved around Jaejoong, the perfect son. Clenching his fist, Junsu shoved a piece of chicken into his mouth and chewed hard, hoping to avoid further conversation with his father.

“Yah, Micky Park! Where’s the money we asked for, huh?” Yoochun felt his head being dragged up by his hair violently. Tears began to form in his eyes from the pain as he blurted out, “No, no, please, I’m begging you, my mother needs the money for her medicine or she’ll die! Please …”

His desperate pleas only earned an aggressive punch to his lip, splitting it instantly. Yoochun was grabbed by his hood and pushed up brutally against the cold, hard brick wall of the alley. The gangsters surrounding him from all sides raised blows and kicks on him with the weapons that they welt in their hands. Yoochun doubled over and tried to shield himself from the avalanche of fists and lashes, but to no avail. He could only hug himself in defense, wincing from the pain that echoed from his arms and back.

“I’m giving you three more days. If you don’t pay up by then, you are going to be dead!” The gangster spat and turned on his heel, his lackeys following him. Yoochun could not stop the tears that were flowing freely down his face. He hugged himself more tightly and started to rock, willing the pain and tears away …

His mobile phone vibrated in his back pocket, causing him to stem his tears hurriedly. Rubbing his eyes with the back of his hand, Yoochun pressed the connect button. “Hello?”

“Yoochun?” A deep bass voice could be heard.

Yoochun recognised the voice instantly. “Yunho. What’s up?” He pinched the bridge of his nose, trying to muffle any signs of his plight.

“Yoochun … Were you beaten up again by those punks?” Yunho was hesitant. He could tell from his friend’s voice that Yoochun had been crying. But knowing him, he would probably be curling up into a ball at the end of some dark alley, crying his heart out helplessly alone and not wanting anyone else to find him.

“No, of course not! I’m on my way home to have dinner with my mother.” Yoochun lied.

“You know very well that it’s not the truth, Chun. Where are you? I’ll come over right now.” Yunho asked concernedly. He didn’t want his friend to faint like the last time he did.

“It’s alright. I can handle this. I’m okay.” Yoochun lied again.

On the end of the line, Yunho sighed. Yoochun was always like this, never wanting to burden his friends, or letting others see the weakest side of him. He didn’t want anyone to pity him when he was at his lowest. He had too big of a pride.

“Okay. I’ll bring some supper over as a treat. How does cheesecake sound?” Yunho contemplated his choices.

“Of course! You know I never say no to cheesecake.” Yoochun laughed heartily, earning a chuckle from Yunho. Whispering their farewells, both men hung up the phone, their smiles dropping gradually. Yunho knew Yoochun was not being honest with him, but there was nothing he could do. Yoochun, on the other hand … Could not bear to trouble Yunho with his own personal problems.

Getting up to his feet, Yoochun dusted himself off and tried to put a smile on his face as he dragged his feet to his third job of the day, hoping that he’d be able to find solace in Yunho and his treat later on.

“Father, I have to return to my room. Please excuse me.” Junsu announced abruptly, knowing full well what was going to come. And truly, it did. His father’s face flushed with irritation.
“Junsu, what is so important that you must skip the rest of dinner for it?”

Junsu would have dearly loved to reply, “Just your very presence irks me!” but being the meek and obedient second Kim son he was, he merely replied, “I am not feeling well, Father.”

His father tsk-ed unsympathetically. “You should learn to take a leaf out of your brother’s book, Junsu. Never crack under pressure. Very well. You may have the night off. I’ll see you tomorrow. Rest early.”

Junsu bowed his head slightly, feeling the intensity of Jaejoong’s gaze on him. Jerking his head slightly as a gesture to his brother that he was fine, he literally fled the dining room to the comforts of his own.

Junsu didn’t know what had gotten into him. He had never done this before, slipping out in the night. Seized by an impulse, he shimmied down the well-used tree by his window (thanks to Jaejoong). Once both feet were planted firmly on the ground, he started running. Away from his house, away from his father, away from rules, away from the everything he was supposed to be. Junsu only stopped for breath when he was 3 streets away, in front of a small, lighted convenience store. Feeling as though his body was under the control of another mind, he pulled open the door and stepped into the brightness, still panting slightly.

“Welcome! Please take a look around.” He was greeted by a bright voice at the counter. Angling his face, Junsu could see a dazzling smile that was flashed at him, and he was a little taken aback at the way the other man was grinning at him - he could feel the transparent sincerity and there was no restrain to keep it from showing.

“Thank you,” Junsu murmured shyly, his usual habit whenever encountering strangers. Fiddling with his hands, he strolled around aimlessly, not knowing what to buy with practically nothing in his pockets.

“Here, have a drink. It’s on me.” A can appeared in front of his eyes. Junsu looked up, and his eyes met with the other’s warm liquid brown ones. “H-How did you -”

“Simple. I saw you running here, and you’re dressed in just a t-shirt and casual pants. You don’t look like someone who came here to buy something.” Junsu could feel a blush creeping up his cheeks for no reason at all. “Thank you.” He whispered for the second time.

“You’re very welcome. By the way, I’m Micky.” The man announced his name proudly.

Junsu repeated his name to commit it to memory, “Micky. I’m … Jun - Xiah.” He changed mid-course, choosing to tell Yoochun his English name in fear that the other man might feel intimidated if he knew his real status.

Just then, the owner of the convenience store stepped out, interrupting their conversation.

“Yah Micky Park! Are you going to tidy up the mess you made at the back room or stand there chatting up a man the whole night?” The obese man yelled.

“Yes, Sir. I’m coming.” Shooting Junsu an apologetic glance, Yoochun left Junsu to stare at his back view.

Feeling warmth arise from inside his heart like never before, Junsu stepped out lightly of the store.
