Matt avoids Charlie after that and it seems that Charlie is doing the same.

But that doesn't mean Matt stays out of trouble. When he empties his lunch tray into Chris Carver's backpack a week later he finds himself back in that same classroom after school. Charlie is there as well. Matt doesn't know what he's done this time and it isn't like he cares anyway. He just ignores the other boy and continues his copying. The word he is at is 'argue'.

A month later Matt throws a tennis ball through one of the school windows. When he arrives at detention that day, Charlie isn't there. For some reason he is almost disappointed about that.

Charlie is there five days later, after Matt yelled at his history teacher. Matt still thinks he was in the right. The man is an ass and doesn't know shit about history.

When Matt sits down at the desk next to Charlie, the boy looks over at him and grins. Matt can't help it, he grins back.

The next day, Charlie seeks him out at lunch break, dumping his tray onto the table next to Matt's.

“Hey, I'm Charlie,” he says casually, as if they haven't met before.

“I'm Matt,” Matt says, “And I already know your name.”

Charlie shrugs, “I know you're Matt, too.”

“What do you want?” Matt asks, but there is no real edge to his question. He is actually intrigued why Charlie would break their unspoken pact of avoiding each other's company.

“Thought you might want to hang out after school. A bunch of us are going down to the river. You wanna come along?”

“Whatever.”

“Cool, see you at the gates after school.” With that, Charlie grabs his tray again and wanders off. Maybe, Matt thinks, Charlie isn't so bad after all.
