Your friendly neighborhood mods have plans in the works for the next couple of months (v. cool plans. With signups and things!) And, because nothing warms the heart like random crossovers and comment parties, I present an intermittent comment challenge ( Read more... )

Miles switches off the telly when they start reporting on the missions to Mars taking off. He made his choice, that was a part of his life over and done with and he wasn't going to let himself miss it.

He spends the next two days doing everything he can think of to keep himself occupied and away from the telly. But he finally breaks down and switches it on just in time to see Maddux, grinning from space on one of their televised check ins, and it takes Miles' breath away, makes him sit heavily in the chair.

It was a mistake to leave, and he knows it. Not that it changes anything. So he sits there and watches Maddux talk, his blood rushing in his ears so loudly he can't hear the audio on the telly, and he thinks that if he ever gets the chance, no matter what it takes, he's going to go back.

The call comes five weeks later. Miles is sure that Maddux doesn't know about it--they hadn't exactly parted on the best of terms, and there aren't enough furious messages demanding that he decline. He's intrigued, because if they've called and hidden it from the crew, there must be something rather spectacularly wrong.

Miles isn't really worried about Maddux, except for how he is. He always is, even when he tells himself differently.

And so he spends the next few hours packing and calling home. His father is concerned, but Peter smirks and rolls his eyes and wishes Miles luck. They've always got on, and Miles is fairly certain that--should anything actually happen--Peter will be making calls and putting the family back together.

Not that anything is going to happen. Probably.

Matt would just about kill for a shower. Sure, having a bath got you clean, and the bath at 221b was pretty impressive, deep and copper, and man, he really liked stretching out in it, but it just didn't compare to a shower. And also, he was never going to wear a tie or button the top of a shirt all the way up again ( ... )

The next day, they get a visit from a man who calls himself Moriarty. He storms into the flat, and Matt is halfway to the fireplace poker when Charlie grabs his arm, motions for Moriarty to sit down. He offers tea and a cookie and Moriarty blinks slowly before sinking into the most uncomfortable chair in the room.

Matt stands by the window and watches Charlie talk, his pistol in his pocket.

*is shamelessly using this* This is the beginning of my doomed longfic. I require some butt-kicking to finish it, so feel free to tell me what you think. The first time Matt meets Charlie they are thirteen years old. It's Matt's first day at his new school  because his dad has remarried and he's decided that the old house holds too many memories. Apparently they have to move to an entirely different part of the city to satisfy his father's need to forget Matt's mother. Matt didn't want to move. He didn't want to lose the places that held happy memories. Already, the image of his mother is fading in his mind and he's afraid of losing her completely. But being only ten he doesn't have any say in it, no matter how much he talks ( ... )
