My sister is throwing me a baby shower. In early November. Which means she needs to know how many people are going to be there by about mid-October. Which means we have to send out invitations in earlyish September. Which is mere WEEKS AWAY.
All of which means I had to decide where to register for baby stuff and go do it. And I did! Last weekend! It may not seem like it, but this is a huge accomplishment for me. I know next to nothing about babies. The last time we had a baby in my family that I spent any amount of time with was about 20 years ago (when I was 14 and not paying any attention, I assure you). So I called upon several of my friends who have had recent babies and begged for their help to tell me what I actually needed vs. what I could skip altogether. I got varied responses (some hilariously so), but most were in general agreement on the big things. And the best part was that a couple who'd just had a baby last September went with us to help us navigate the wilds of Babies R Us. And we needed it. I felt like a stranger in a strange land. Not only are there 50 million things you "need," but then there are 50 varieties and 50 different brands of that one thing and omg how can you possibly decide anything?! But we got it done and I have spent the last few days intensively editing my registry online. And then I created another registry on amazon.com because they have a wider variety of items, obvs.
However, this has created a dilemma for me. I discovered that many of the things I registered for at Babies R Us are also available on amazon.com for 15%-20% less. So it would make sense to just have all those listed on amazon and take them off the BRU registry. But I know a lot of people will still want to walk into a store (probably a day or two before my shower) and buy something off the shelf. This is what happened with my wedding shower. And those people were like, "I couldn't find a thing on your registry! So I got you this [ugly, useless, not-my-taste-at-all item] instead!" (Ignore for a moment how much of an ungrateful wretch this make me seem and just roll with me here.) So what do you think I should do? Keep all items at both places? Just put the duplicate items on amazon.com and delete them off BRU? I can't decide. I have already made all the decisions my brain can make this week.
Also, I want to show you the crib bedding I found! After searing my eyeballs at BRU on countless hideously colorblocked and garishly cartooned designs,
I found one that I love. I'm linking to it at a random website because they have the best picture of it, but it's available through a seller on amazon. It's cute and modern and a bit quiet and peaceful looking. I get the feeling I am going to need all the zen I can possibly get once I have an actual baby to put in it.
