"I believe this is an interesting speculation. I am inclined towards the idea of it being a prison. I would like to know which of the theories you lean towards."

Ah, Captain Loken... Frankly, I'm not sure I adhere to any of them--I have many others. But out of the three simple ones I outlined, the idea that it's an experiment appeals to me. Perhaps that's my bias.

The prison idea has a certain amount of appeal. It explains why some very powerful beings have been placed here. One seeming error in it, however, is that one would imagine that threats that require an imprisonment of this level could never be released--and yet people are permanently droned, with the implication that they have been released, fairly frequently.

"I am not sure. Could it not be that their wills broke and they accepted their role within the town? That is how I interpreted someone becoming a drone permanently. I am open to other interpretations, given proper evidence. Most of my knowledge on the behavior of drones is second though I trust the source implicitly."

It is a possibility, but it seems unlikely to me. The behavioral changes are extremely abrupt, and furthermore, they occur in such a regular and predictable fashion, yet in very different personalities.

"Good point. I wonder if we could investigate the mechanism behind it somehow. Something like that could be the key to defeating the masters of this place."

Nagato-san has told me that there is some knowledge about it... namely that the process of temporary droning is qualitatively different from the process of permanent droning.

"Ah, the san honorific again." [he muses out loud, then returns to the question at hand.]

"Nagato? This name is new to me."

I've been using proper Japanese honorifics for the rather large Japanese population, as a rule, and Western titles for the Westerners; and whatever title is appropriate for others.

Yuki Nagato has been here for one of the longest periods of the residents here; she is also from my world.

"I see. I appreciate you addressing me as Captain, but I command no one here."

"And this Yuki Nagato is a reliable informant then?"

[he smiles at the phone for a moment.]

"I would ask you to tell me of this... Japanese population. I know very little of Terra's ancient history, prior to the Dark Age of technology and unification, but I am very curious."

True, but you are a captain, are you not?

As for Nagato-san, she is perhaps the most reliable informant I know of.

Certainly--though there is, of course, someone who claims to be the personification of Japan here. You might be best served asking him. [Said slightly ironically.] We are an East Asian culture, and distinguished from Western cultures in many ways. The honorifics are representative of a highly hierarchical social system which emphasizes family and the community as well as proper social rituals.

"Ah, I fear your answer has only shown me how little people of my time know of yours. Can you explain East Asian cultures vs. Western cultures? Cultures are planetary, or even sector-based, in the Imperium of man."

Well-- there are other types. I'm sure you recognize that there are diversities within planetary populations. East Asians are simply a group of culturally-linked peoples who live in a certain region on our planet. Terra, did you call it? Fitting enough.

It's a slightly circular definition, but there's no point in referring to geography.

"I see. I fear we have gone far afield, but I will confess I am rather enjoying our conversation. You are an education to speak with."

Thank you, Captain, but I'm still being educated myself. Still, they say the best way to learn is through teaching.

"I was reminded of that recently, when I was teaching some of the people in town the basics of war-craft and the reasons one should, or should not, wield the blade."

[he smiles at the memory.]

"A young girl quite surprised me with her talent and resourcefulness."

See, Captain, I have entirely zero skills with fighting of any kind. I'm afraid I would surprise you with my inability and uselessness on the battlefield.
