(5) Speculations I

[Phone, standard filter: Sasaki, having returned from Westport in a contemplative mood, has decided to air a few of her speculations.]

Hmm, residents of Mayfield, it seems we've returned to the status quo again. If anyone has gained any new information from this latest trip, I'd like to hear it. And I'd like to discuss the ontology behind our abductions. I've heard the prevailing theories about the nature of Mayfield, but I am not sure that I've heard a popularly accepted opinion.

The first one that comes to mind is that there is no particular pattern: that someone with the ability and no particular judgment is taking us here on a whim, essentially. It seems to be partially corroborated by the constantly shifting nature of the strange occurrences, as well as the lack of a general pattern in the profiles of those who are abducted--though we do seem to fit some general criteria, but that's a different matter.

A second explanation may be that this is an interdimensional prison, of sorts, meant to keep those who have potentially disruptive natures or abilities from their worlds. It seems possible, in that many of us are indeed dangerous, though the fact that we are sometimes returned to our worlds would indicate something strange about this hypothesis.

Another simple explanation is that of an experiment of some kind. Again, in this case, we would have to imagine that the experiment is being conducted on some very strange basis, because of the variations in the residents. We come from different worlds, so if it is an experiment, either each person has been chosen for a reason, or the authorities have access to this specific subset of worlds to pull from.

All of this, however, has undoubtedly been considered by others before. I'm not sure, though, if the expansion I'm about to propose has been. If it is in fact an experiment, what is the aim of the experiment? Consider that almost everyone pulled her is 'exceptional' in some way, whether it is because they have encountered the supernatural in their world, or because they are the supernatural, or because they are prominent citizens, or extremely intelligent. I propose therefore that Mayfield might perhaps be a way of gathering together a society that will advance more quickly than any other, assembling the unnatural and the intelligent and presenting them with an existential threat--that is to say, the mysteries that we have seen in the form of Westport, as well as in the form of the seemingly-omnipotent overseers of this place. Perhaps someone is looking to advance the human race or solve a certain problem, and has presented us with this conundrum in order to see whether a society of the exceptional can cope with it. What are your opinions?
