a random update

Dec 24, 2004 23:01

hello folks. yes, yes, i know, i tend to only update on breaks, and i rarely speak of anything important. but i'm sitting here, fresh after reading entertainment weekly's "best of 2004" issue, and they called the polyphonic spree's "together we're heavy" one of the worst albums of the year. now, i'm not saying it's anywhere near as good as a number of the other discs listed on the nice column, like franz ferdinand's self titled, green day's american idiot, and certainly not the garden state soundtrack, which is, in my opinion, the best soundtrack outside of a tarrantino film, and a fucking amazing movie as well. anyway, my beef came with their chastising of the polyphonic spree. they are not the best band of the year. but, their single "hold me now" and even the rest of the album, as i peruse it, is very satisfying and etheral, in a gospel choir orchestra vibe. and for 9.99 at gallery of sound including 60 minutes of live performance on an included dvd disc, it's less money than a live session of joe nardone and the superheynas or whatever the fuck his band is called, so EW should lay off.

with that off of my chest, i'm back back back from nyc, and finished with my first semester at new york university. it's a strange feeling, having at a minimum, one eighth of my college career finished already. as an actor, i'm a completely different person than when i left. i have understandings, insights, techniques, nuances, and knowledge that i couldn't even conceive of before i started my training at Adler. it's my home away from home, and i don't feel more comfortable or more like i belong anywhere outside of right here, on blueberry hill road, or possibly in brittany hall on the 9th floor, where some of the coolest people i know reside.

college, man, college college college. i'm very different. i don't like this here valley, even the rustic, silly charms that cory and i delighted in over thanksgiving break aren't doing it for me anymore. i mean, there are aspects i adore: i love cinemark, i think i will always love the wyoming valley mall and the arena hub, the music box is glorious, and on that note, RON'S HOUSE IS AMAZING. i can't wait to help decorate, and eventually to have mad parties in the basement. so there are many things about the area that i love, but in general, i think i've just really distanced myself. it's good to come back, but it's going to be hard to spend any length of time here. this summer, i hope to be in utah doing shakespeare, but we'll see if that works out or not.

the other day gary and i sat at curry with cory and jordan and talked "shop" as my mom would call it, basically, about drama and dramatists, brecht, pirandello, artaud, chekhov, ibsen, shaw....and it was glorious. he had just explained his theory about art, inspiration and ideas, and diagrammed it on a napkin, and then we launched into a fireball session about art, specifically, in this case, drama, all in a coffee shop of sorts. and i realized that it took a hundred and thirty mile trip, back to edwardsville, from manhattan, for us to finally connect. i'm looking forward to a second semester and years to come of collaborative work with gary and i, cause he's ridiculously intelligent and a filmmaker, and i'm an actor, and that spells f-u-n.

i sang at church tonight, which was fun. saw jeff pace and chris young, who i haven't in forever. hopefully be playing poker with chris and his buddies sometime next week.

this update is very random.
