Well, we auditioned the drummer and guitar player this weekend, if you wanna call it that. Don't get me wrong, these guys were good, damn good, we're just not too sure what they think of us. They play a more abstract and experimental sound than we do, but basically they have the overall sound we've been trying to lead towards for a while. The guitar player's nothing short of a genius and the drummer's exactly what I've been looking for in a drummer ever since the band started. The only thing they really said negative about us was that my guitar playing was "too predictable". Am i suprised? nope. It doesn't really bother me all that much anymore. If it's too predictable, i'll try to find a way to step it up. If these guys get in the band, we'll all have to really step it up, because these guys have their shit in gear, and they aren't gonna slow down for us, we gotta speed up for them. I have no problem with that, I welcome those kinda challenges.
I had a long talk with the guitar player, Steve, the other day. He's a very well spoken individual who's got his head in the right place. He said that they've been trying to do really experimental stuff but the labels didn't pick them up because they didn't have that one hit single song. I tried to tell him that that's where we come into play. Steve's great at writing the experimental, tool-ish stuff, and, although it's "too predictable" at times, i can write really catchy stuff. I didn't really take the too predictable stuff as an insult. I think if all five of us join forces and find a happy medium between their experimental and our predictable, it'll work out great. Experimental is cool, but at the same time with most audiences they get confused by it if you don't go back to something that's predictable
one of my biggest concerns is that if these guys decide to join, we're gonna have to rewrite all of our songs. it just seems kinda strange, because we're heading into the recording studio in a few weeks, basically to record 4 songs that may not sound anything like they do now in a month or two. ah well, seems like we're throwing money away, but idunno i need to get something recorded.
