Even though people had been allowed back in their homes after recent lockdowns, the streets of New York were still fairly empty. And so the SHIELD van carrying Spider-Man and Spider-Woman had no problems driving up to Miles' home without drawing suspicion.
"One problem," Miles said in the back of the van, looking down at the SHIELD hoodie he was wearing. "These aren't my clothes."
"Best I could do," Jessica said, shrugging as she sat across from him. "Next time, bring a backpack. Peter Parker used to have a backpack of stuff."
"I can't walk in my house after being missing for two entire days looking like I just joined SHIELD," Miles pointed out.
Jessica held her tablet up and turned the camera on, giving her an X-ray view through the van and into Miles' house. "No one's in your house. Your parents aren't home. Sneak in and change," she said.
"Whoa!" Miles exclaimed. "How did you get your tablet to do that?"
"We have all the cool toys," Jessica explained.
"You do," Miles agreed.
"Okay, so you can tell your parents you were at the Borough Park library," Jessica said, checking a note on her tablet. "That was where SHIELD was congregating refugees in this area. They just let everyone out, so just tell your parents you were there. As long as they weren't there, too, you'll be fine. And keep your story vague. Key to a good lie: short and simple."
"Speaking of good lies," Miles said, "what do you know about me that I don't know? Why do you care so much about me and how stupid I am?"
Jessica knew she looked indecisive. He deserved the truth, he did. Miles had taken on Peter's mantle against all common sense and reason and, well, he was wearing the suit well. He was living up to the name. He deserved an answer. But... She couldn't.
"Who are you, Jessica Drew?" Miles asked.
"I promise you, one day I will tell you and I promise you it's nothing bad about you. I just..." Jessica paused for a moment. "I really want you to do well. I really want you to learn from... to learn from all of our mistakes. And doing what you did today, even though we all got through it, it wasn't learning from anyone's mistakes."
"You're not going to tell me?" Miles asked.
Jessica opened the van door so he could step out. "Miles... I'll tell you when I'm ready. But not today. Go home. Be with your family. And know that I am crazy jealous." She even gave him a warm smile before closing the door.
The SHIELD van drove off, leaving Miles to figure out what he was supposed to have learned while Jessica tried to figure out what she was supposed to teach.
