Question about dying a wool hat

Ive never dyed wool before and I was wondering if anyone could tell me if its possible to dye it without destroying the wool or shape.

Its 100% wool and I was hoping to dye it black. Ive heard of a few disaster stories but no one has present a solution or a different method.
