Reasons why Claudia Gray's
Evernight is a much better Vampire YA series than Twilight, an incomplete list
- There's an actual plot
- The vampires are non-sparkly vampires that drink blood
- ...They're also at a boarding school
- The two guys fighting for her are genuinely fleshed out characters
- Awesome twists are awesome and consistent with the universe Gray has laid out
- Which means Gray can actually write
- Awesome twists also mock generic tropes in a way that won't piss off readers
- The story addresses potential domestic abuse complications in a realistic manner
- ie Bianca isn't a victim, or
hollow placeholder for all of the teenage girls in the audience to project their personalities onto I mean yeah, it's a bit predictable with the red-haired heroine and the sidekicks and the mysterious past/settings and the eternal love 4ever, but for a YA series it's also self-aware and it holds up against generic conventions fairly well. I like it a lot more than I like most 'urban fantasy' series, oh puke.
If you'd like to read it in a fairly illicit manner, leave a comment on this entry and I will enable you. And this is how I spend my weekends, vaguely ill and wondering how to approach my pomo essay/eating disorder article. I miss you.
