Series: Shakespeare AU drabble (I don't even like this, but Scone is making me post so that everything's in order. XP Horface)
Twas long past twilight when she finally returned to her tent, dirty and exhausted, jacket open and loose, and finally just Viola. Squinting into the candle light, she propped her lord’s letter into view and made haste to write its return, pausing with contemplative fingers folded against her chin as she carefully picked through tired, muddled thoughts. She wished to offer a written distraction to Lord Fortinbras, but not one made from the grave news and heavy reports that did seem to piece Wittenberg together at the seams. Not of the new sums of corpses buried, or the wide-eyed villagers who followed their troops like cattle, or of Horatio, mad and rasping out for foreign names all but unknown to her.
Instead she wrote him stories from Illyria, moralities that Feste would tell in the summer while Olivia dozed in the sun and her brother made tiny men out of twigs. She dared not leave Wittenberg yet, but hoped at least to turn his thoughts in her absence. The world held enough to worry about in’t already.
Fortinbras writes a love letter
MY DEAREST CESARIO,
YOUR EYES ARE BROWN LIKE THE DIRT THAT OUR HORSES WALKED OVER IN THE SPRINGTIME AFTER ALL OF THE SNOW HAD MELTED AWAY. BECAUSE IT WAS SPRINGTIME AND NOT COLD ANYMORE. WE ALL WERE NOT WEARING COATS DUE TO THE WEATHER, WHICH WAS WARM AND BURNING LIKE MY LOVE FOR YOU. THERE WERE LOTS OF BIRDS AND SMALL ANIMALS, TOO. ALSO, YOUR NOSE IS LIKE A CLOAK BUTTON.
