Why this must be read: I love a good outside POV story and this one is totally outside. Stories about Stiles or Stiles/Derek or about werewolves from the POV of the Sheriff or from other members of the show are interesting (sometimes fascinating) but this story is from the (non-Mary Sue) POV of Stiles' new friend at college (Sandy) who knows next to nothing about him and nothing about the people of Beacon Hills and their life there. The author is spot on with her characterization of a slightly more mature Stiles than we've seen on the show and the rest of the Pack. Also, she balances the need to focus on the POV character while giving plenty of 'screen time' to the characters we're reading the fic for. I like Sandy. She's a smart cookie, very perceptive and cool in a crisis. She knows how to feel around the edges of the mystery that is Stiles to find the answers.
“What do you know about Stiles’ life outside the campus?” Sandy asks as she sits next to Jake in the cafeteria the next day. It’s Friday and plenty people have left to spend their weekend elsewhere, so it’s fairly quiet all around the building.
Jake finishes the mouthful of coffee, sets the mug on the table and takes a comfortable looking position, feet on the table, arms crossed on his chest and he looks up at Sandy, interest in his eyes. “Why are you asking?”
Sandy sits down and bites her lip for a moment. “You know why, I’ve seen you, you know. you don’t fool anyone, except maybe Stiles because he isn’t looking at the way you look at him.”
Jake raises an eyebrow. “And how do I look at him, then?”
“Like he’s a mystery you’d love to solve,” Sandy says matter of fact and, after a beat, Jake nods slowly.
Jake thinks for a while and then says, “I know there’s the ever mysterious Derek, who, to me, seems like he has Stiles as his beck and call. Then there’s Lydia - I’ve seen her twice and man, she’s hot.”
