Master List of Fic on LJWhy this must be read: One of the things I like about Inception is that the film doesn't feel the need to give you every detail. For most of the characters we're only ever given one name. We know minimal details about their backgrounds and relationships, which allows fic writers an almost endless array of possibilities with which to play.
So naturally, when names aren't given (like Eames' first name), the urge is there to fill in the blanks, a task harder than it would appear. Writer
fahye put it like this: "the fact that I couldn't make one work suggests that it is in fact so terrible that it would require professional extraction for him to own up to it."
Even Ariadne and Yusuf are curious, and set out to find the answer to the ultimate question: "What's Eames' first name?" Of course, as these things go, everyone soon gets roped into the game as Ariadne and Yusuf employ increasingly devious (and ethically questionable) methods of discovery.
"You really don't know?" she turns to ask Cobb. "But you've known him for years!"
Cobb laughs. "We don't exactly make time for small-talk," he says.
Ariadne rolls her eyes. "Knowing someone's first name isn't 'small-talk,'" she says. "It's part of the acquaintance process called the 'introduction.'"
"Then we didn't really get introduced," Cobb replies.
"That doesn't bother you?" Ariadne asks.
"Should it?" he asks back. "Does it bother you that you don't know Arthur's?"
"Don't know my what," Arthur asks, walking into the room.
Ariadne stares. "'Arthur' is your last name?" she asks.
"Surprise," he says dryly, opening the fridge and pulling out a Corona.
"Little early for drinking, isn't it?" Cobb asks.
"Not for Eames," Arthur says, cutting up a lime. "And not after that dream," he adds, giving Ariadne a significant look.
