Why this must be read:
Suspense! Bomb-diffusing techie Nite Owl! The Crimebusters working together as a team! Feelings in the face of imminent death! The setup is that the heroes are faced with a bomb and a ticking timer, and Nite Owl's the one who's going to try to disarm it. Part of the fic focuses on the group's response to the threat, and part on Nite Owl and Rorschach at the bomb site where they might die any second. The latter bits have some fantastic interaction between Nite Owl and Rorschach. It uses one of my favorite tropes, "I'm not leaving you, we'll die together if we have to", and executes it beautifully. It really plays up how much these two care about each other, both as crimefighting partners and as friends, and I can't get enough of it.
Dan registers, as he lets the breath out, that he isn’t dead. The snips are shaking violently in his hands, and the white wire is in two pieces, and the timer, of course, is still counting down. (So much for getting lucky on the first try.)
Then he glances up, and Rorschach is staring steadily back, and he realizes just how lucky he really was.
