Only when they were very close to the whale did Tom start to worry. He knew the danger; a whale would never attack them, pacific animals as they were, but it could be annoyed by their presence. It was swimming very close to the surface - a single brush of the wooden hull against her skin and it would send them flying with a single movement of its powerful tail. He turned, wanting to warn Cisco - and froze. What had been hidden before under thick tarps - the sharp harpoons, the chains, the fixed block - and the merciless expression on the sailor’s face, his sardonic grin - Tom saw it all, and the other boats around as well that had joined them, equally armed and ready, with the men aboard, their gazes fixed on the still quiet whale.
