Brief history of your character (100-200 word minimum):
The Earth as we know it does not exist anymore. Humans used up all her resources and eventually had to set off into space to find new planets to inhabit. They terraformed what they found into livable homes. Thus, Earth-That-Was is somewhat legendary to Mal and his crew. Two superpowers came into power to form the Anglo-Sino Alliance, shortened to the Alliance

Mal was born in the latter half of the 25th century on the planet Shadow. He grew up on his mother’s ranch where he got his education from her and about forty ranch hands. In the earliest part of the 26th century, the Alliance moved to unify all the planets. A fair amount of people did not appreciate the notion of Unification and formed the Independents, informally known as Browncoats due to the brown coats they wore as a uniform.

Around the year 2510, Mal volunteered with the Browncoats in the Unification War against the Alliance. It was there he met his loyal second in command Zoe, who would later become first mate on Serenity. Mal rose to the rank of sergeant, and ended up as captain of over 2000 men at the Battle of Serenity Valley when all the Independent leaders were carefully picked off by the Alliance. The Battle of Serenity effectively defeated the Browncoats.

After the War, Mal went in search of escape and found it in the form of a ship: more specifically, a 03-K64 Firefly class transport ship. He named the ship after the battle that broke the Independents’ spirit: Serenity. Mal then built a crew maintaining Zoe as his second in command and gaining a pilot, mechanic, and muscle. He also allowed a registered Companion (a sort of future geisha) to rent a shuttle to help their credibility. They started taking jobs that were less than legal, but Mal never accepted a job that would hurt those in need. He preferred stealing from the Alliance anyway. In the course of these proceedings, the crew took on some passengers, who became rather permanent. These included Shepherd Book a minister, and the siblings Simon and River Tam. The siblings were fugitives running away from the Alliance. The Alliance wanted to take River back and continue experimenting on her. Mal refused to hand the two over, and they soon became part of the Ship’s crew.

Brief synopsis of your character's personality (100 word minimum):
Mal is a very complicated person. On the surface, he strikes one as a common thief. He does “jobs” regardless of the legality of them for money to keep his ship running and his crew fed. As one delves deeper into his character though, one cannot call Mal a bad person.

He clearly cares deeply for his ship and crew. In the episode “Out of Gas,” he sends his entire crew away on the shuttles while he works by himself to keep the ship in the sky. During the episode, we see flashbacks as he brings new crew members on board. He chose each person for a specific reason, and moreso, he refuses to let them die just because Serenity ain’t working. The last flashback is probably the most revealing though. A salesman tries to sell Mal a sturdy ship that’ll keep flying forever, but Mal is caught in a trance looking at another ship. A firefly class transport.

The ship itself is an important part of Mal’s character. The ship represents his freedom from the Anglo-Sino Alliance. We know he fought on the side of the independents in the War against Unification. We also know that during that time, he did believe in a God of some sort. And we know that at Serenity Valley, he unofficially became the leader of the entire army, only to watch as his army was slaughtered and the Alliance completely massacred the Independents. The Battle of Serenity broke the Independents and was the deciding battle in the war. This battle clearly meant a lot to Mal as he named his ship Serenity. Furthermore, in the whole series, we see that he has lost his belief in God. Mal lost his faith in the people in charge that day and did everything in his power to avoid the government.

He flies to stay free, away from the Alliance’s prying eyes. He takes jobs where he can in order to keep flying. These jobs are sometime legal, sometimes not. However, we find that he does not just take any job. When he finds out the goods he steals for a man named Niska are actually medicine that will save the lives of downtrodden miners, he gives the cargo back, even at the risk of angering Niska.

Niska also illustrates how hard Mal can be. During an intense torture scene, Mal refused to break, instead cracking jokes at Niska even after he dies. No matter how many times Mal gets knocked down, he keeps getting back up. He tells his soldiers that “When you can’t walk, you crawl. An’ when you can’t crawl, you find someone to carry you.” Never. Give. Up.

On a somewhat related note, he definitely believes in sticking up for oneself. Mal has no qualms about killing in self defence. Or if someone’s threatening his crew. As he tells Saffron, “When someone tries to kill you, you try and kill ‘em right back.” There is no need to let anyone walk all over you.

Mal cares deeply about the downtrodden. He routinely helps River and Simon Tam even though the siblings cause more grief for his ship than they seem to help. He even goes so far as to save them from burning at the stake when villagers on a planet kidnap them.

Mal seems to struggle with his lack of belief. While he does devoutly deny the existence of a god, he seems relatively aimless. It’s as though when he lost his belief in God, he lost his belief in everything.

Furthermore, there is an emotional connection between Mal and Inara that he tends to dance around and ignore. He does recognize that it’s there, but he doesn’t seem to want to let her in, and argues with her most of the time they talk.

Stats
Age:
Good Question: According to an information screen of him in Serentity, his birthday is September 20, 2468 which would make him 49 at the time of Firefly and Serenity. However, he does not look like he’s 49. The same screen misspells his name as Malcom, so there is some question as to whether the screen is correct and that maybe there was a number transposition making him born in 2486. If he were born in 2486, he would be 31, an age that looks much more appropriate to him onscreen. Thus, I will play him as age 31 based off this explanation.

Appearance: Mal is tall (around 6’1”) and relatively solidly built. Brown hair, blue eyes. His eyes can either hold a twinkle of merriment or a look of the deepest anger, hurt, and sorrow. It really depends on his mood.

Game Information
What is the point of your character's canon in which you are introducing your character?: The scene in Trash after Saffron strands him naked in the desert, just before Inara finds him.
Is your character alive or dead at the point of entry to the game?: Very much alive and pissed off.
What skills does your character have?: Mal is an excellent shot with a gun. He is decent at fist fights… better when the other man is drunker than he is. He has a natural born talent to lead. Fairly decent at reading people, but can still get duped. Great at coming up with plans on the fly, though not all plans are good plans…

Your character will find 10 personal items in their room that the island has placed there. You may only include things that your character would have canonically. Please list them here. (Clothing need not be included as it is automatically provided. Any special articles of clothing, however, e.g. a team uniform, must be listed):
Brown coat from the War
Full set of clothing (tan pants with a brown stripe, boots, dusty red shirt, and suspenders) plus some spare button up shirts in jewel tones of blues, greens, browns, and reds.
Gun holster
Moses Brothers Self-Defense Engine Frontier Model B Pistol
Capture of the members of his crew
The broken port compression coil from Out of Gas
A VERY small amount of money
A capture of just Inara

“Yep... That went well.”

Malcolm Reynolds was sitting naked on a rock in the middle of a desert. And they’d been doing so well too. The whole plan had gone without a hitch until the girl started crying. It was his weakness. He felt sorry for people in trouble. And she took advantage of it. In hindsight, he really shouldn’t have expected anything different from her.

Well, at least they still had Inara as their back-up. Hopefully everything would go shiny that aspect. Inara could take care of herself. Looks like all he could do now was wait for her to get back and then wait for the rest of the crew and his ship to pick them up.

The sun had reached its zenith and passed before Mal started to feel the itching that something had gone wrong. He reached for his communicator before remembering that it wasn’t there. “Liou coe shway duh biao-tze huh hoe-tze duh ur-tze, (stupid son of a drooling whore and monkey)" he swore adding, “This is so not good.” It was time to start walking. He’d come up with a plan, he always did.

Sadly, the walk didn’t solve anything. In fact, he woke up flat on his back in a corridor feeling very disoriented and still very naked. He tried to stand, holding onto the wall to keep himself upright.

“AWwww really? SAFFRON!” he bellowed. She must have drugged him… somehow. He couldn’t quite work out how… his head was too fuzzy.

“SAFFRON YOU Shānyáng tuófēng jìnǚ (goat humping whore), he hollered. She would not get away this easily.
