The Character
Character Name: Malcolm Reynolds
Character Journal: cptn_browncoat
Canon: Firefly and Serenity
Age: Good Question: According to an information screen of him in Serentity, his birthday is September 20, 2468 which would make him 49 at the time of Firefly and Serenity. However, he does not look like he’s 49. The same screen misspells his name as Malcom, so there is some question as to whether the screen is correct and that maybe there was a number transposition making him born in 2486. If he were born in 2486, he would be 31, an age that looks much more appropriate to him onscreen. Thus, I will play him as age 31 based off this explanation.

From When?: In Serenity just after the Doctor puts River to sleep with the saf eword. Mal has the choice of either bringing her back on board the ship or leaving her.

Abilities/Powers: Mal is quite good in a bar brawl. He has fists and he knows how to use them. Furthermore, he is an ace shooter with his gun. He rarely misses when he aims at someone. Mal is fairly adept at coming up with plans rather on the spot. Whether these are good plans or not are for someone else to judge. But he does come up with them. Mal is also smart, but you wouldn’t know it to look at him or hear him talk. He does randomly bring up a cultural fact that surprises others.

Power Limitations: Mal has no powers the Wood would want to take from him

Inventory Clothing on his back which includes khaki trousers with a brown stripe, a red shirt, suspenders, boots, brown overcoat, and holster with gun (Moses Brothers Self-Defense Engine Frontier Model B Pistol).
A capture of Inara leaving. One also sees River and hears Kaylee’s voice in the capture.
A very very small amount of money in his pocket.

Personality:
Mal is a very complicated person. On the surface, he strikes one as a common thief. He does “jobs” regardless of the legality of them for money to keep his ship running and his crew fed. As one delves deeper into his character though, one cannot call Mal a bad person.

He clearly cares deeply for his ship and crew. In the episode “Out of Gas,” he sends his entire crew away on the shuttles while he works by himself to keep the ship in the sky. During the episode, we see flashbacks as he brings new crew members on board. He chose each person for a specific reason, and moreso, he refuses to let them die just because Serenity ain’t working. The last flashback is probably the most revealing though. A salesman tries to sell Mal a sturdy ship that’ll keep flying forever, but Mal is caught in a trance looking at another ship. A firefly class transport.

The ship itself is an important part of Mal’s character. The ship represents his freedom from the Anglo-Sino Alliance. We know he fought on the side of the independents in the War against Unification. We also know that during that time, he did believe in a God of some sort. And we know that at Serenity Valley, he unofficially became the leader of the entire army, only to watch as his army was slaughtered and the Alliance completely massacred the Independents. The Battle of Serenity broke the Independents and was the deciding battle in the war. This battle clearly meant a lot to Mal as he named his ship Serenity. Furthermore, in the whole series, we see that he has lost his belief in God. Mal lost his faith in the people in charge that day and did everything in his power to avoid the government.

He flies to stay free, away from the Alliance’s prying eyes. He takes jobs where he can in order to keep flying. These jobs are sometime legal, sometimes not. However, we find that he does not just take any job. When he finds out the goods he steals for a man named Niska are actually medicine that will save the lives of downtrodden miners, he gives the cargo back, even at the risk of angering Niska.

Mal cares deeply about the downtrodden. He routinely helps River and Simon Tam even though the siblings cause more grief for his ship than they seem to help. He even goes so far as to save them from burning at the stake when villagers on a planet kidnap them.

Mal seems to struggle with his lack of belief. While he does devoutly deny the existence of a god, he seems relatively aimless. It’s as though when he lost his belief in God, he lost his belief in everything.

Furthermore, there is an emotional connection between Mal and Inara that he tends to dance around and ignore. He does recognize that it’s there, but he doesn’t seem to want to let her in, and argues with her most of the time they talk. He does miss her, as is evident by the capture we see him watching in the movie Serenity.

History:
The Earth as we know it does not exist anymore. Humans used up all her resources and eventually had to set off into space to find new planets to inhabit. They terraformed what they found into livable homes. Thus, Earth-That-Was is somewhat legendary to Mal and his crew. Two superpowers came into power to form the Sino-American Alliance, shortened to the Alliance

Mal was born in the latter half of the 25th century on the planet Shadow. He grew up on his mother’s ranch where he got his education from her and about forty ranch hands. In the earliest part of the 26th century, the Alliance moved to unify all the planets. A fair amount of people did not appreciate the notion of Unification and formed the Independents, informally known as Browncoats due to the brown coats they wore as a uniform.

Around the year 2510, Mal volunteered with the Browncoats in the Unification War against the Alliance. It was there he met his loyal second in command Zoe, who would later become first mate on Serenity. Mal rose to the rank of sergeant, and ended up as captain of over 2000 men at the Battle of Serenity Valley when all the Independent leaders were carefully picked off by the Alliance. The Battle of Serenity effectively defeated the Browncoats.

After the War, Mal went in search of escape and found it in the form of a ship: more specifically, a 03-K64 Firefly class transport ship. He named the ship after the battle that broke the Independents’ spirit: Serenity. Mal then built a crew maintaining Zoe as his second in command and getting a pilot, mechanic, and muscle. He also allowed a registered Companion (a sort of future geisha) to rent a shuttle to help their credibility. They started taking jobs that were less than legal, but Mal never accepted a job that would hurt those in need. He preferred stealing from the Alliance anyway. In the course of these proceedings, the crew took on some passengers, who became rather permanent. These included Shepherd Book a minister, and the siblings Simon and River Tam. The siblings were fugitives running away from the Alliance. The Alliance wanted to take River back and continue experimenting on her. Mal refused to hand the two over, and they soon became part of the Ship’s crew.

At the point of game entry, Mal has let the Tams off the boat so they can make their own way in the world. Unfortunately, while Mal goes over some business information with some clients, River walks into the bar and is triggered by a subliminal message on a monitor. She goes batshit and starts beating up everyone in sight. Mal races to the locked guns and finds his just in time to point it at River as he stares down the barrel of the gun she has pointed at him. Simon puts her to sleep with a safe word. Mal’s decision: Does he bring her aboard Serenity again or leave her?

First Person Sample: [5-10 Sentences] ((Taken from a video exchange with Jack Harkness in another game)) [The look on Mal's face turns to one of upset, same look he gets when he finds out things about what the Alliance did to River]

Fèifèi hé hóuzi de jìnǚ slimey sīshēngzǐ! (slimy bastard son of a baboon and a monkey whore) If she needs hidin or anything, I can hide her. I... [looks around to make sure no one is listening even though he's in his room] I shouldn't be telling you this but, we got a girl on our ship... Alliance wants her real bad... they... cut into her brain and did stuff to her... and we do all we can to make sure they don't get her back. She's been hidden in compartments... once we even put her and her brother in a space suit and sent them out to the outer hull so Alliance wouldn't spot them. It ain't right... an' what this lu (jackass) did to your Martha... it' ain't right neither.

Prose Sample: [3-5 paragraphs, 3rd Person POV] ((Taken from a later conversation with Jack after Mal was shifted ahead in time.))
Mal groaned at the headache and finished off the water. "Talked to the sheriff on the phone. Seems an interesting character."

He stood up again and moved to the other window. "It'll take her (Martha Jones who was tortured) a bit of time to be better mentally," he said, reaching up to fiddle with the ear Doc had reattached a few months ago. "Especially if she ain't been tortured before. But it sounds like she has friends. I'll leave her alone... one less big scary person to get in her way."

He listened carefully to the information about the vampire and the Master. "I have to say, aliens and vampires are a bit beyond my skill level. Reavers at least go down with a gun..." He motioned to the table with many makeshift stakes over it plus the one that Spike had handed him to show he was trying to prepare himself.

"It ain't helpful that people come back from the dead. My damn motto don't work no more."

[response from Jack and then…]

"If someone tries to kill you, you kill them right back," he said. "It's pretty much the way we work out in the black. But it don't work so good when the person you kill comes back from the dead."

He looked over at the stakes and laughed. "I tried... but all the... hunters I suppose thought they looked like gǒupì (shit). I was planning on modeling my next one of the stake Spike gave me. And maybe making wooden bullets. I'm much better at shooting things..."

Character’s canon: Firefly
What type of canon is your character from? (eg, book, movie, tv show, etc): Television Show

Brief history of your character (100-200 words):
Captain Malcolm Reynolds was supposedly born in 2468 according to information on an alliance screen. However, this would put him at 49. The same screen also misspelled his name as Macolm, so there is a good chance that he was actually born in 2486 and is actually 31. Malcolm was brought up on a ranch with his mother and various ranch hands.
Around the year 2510, Mal volunteered with the Independents or Brown Coats in the Unification War against the Alliance. It was there he met his loyal second in command Zoe, who would later become first mate on Serenity. Brief synopsis of your character’s personality (100-300 words):
Captain Malcolm Reynolds is a bit of an enigma. He is very loyal to every member of his crew. This is probably due to his days in the war when he tried to never leave a member behind. He did everything possible to save Kaylee’s life when shot, Book when he was down, and to get Simon and River back from the people who kidnapped them. He dislikes government and has lost all faith in a higher being. He does seem to have faith in humanity though. When a job strikes him as morally wrong, such as stealing medicine from sick people, he would rather drop the job and risk the wrath of Niska than condemn the sick to death. At the same time, his philosophy of, “If someone tries to kill you, you try and kill them right back” shows the darker side of Malcolm Reynolds. Malcolm also has a huge love for his ship. In the episode Out of Gas, he sends his entire crew into the shuttles while he single-handedly tries to fix the ship. In a series of flashbacks, one sees just how much he does care for his crew and his ship. He has relatively good problem solving skills and can improvise. Malcolm is also reasonably educated and literate. He doesn’t often show it, but he has definitely read some literature and can reference it when he wants to.

Brown coat from the War

Write your character’s entrance post (minimum 400 words. You will use this to post your character’s entrance into the game.):

“Yep... That went well.” Malcolm Reynolds was sitting naked on a rock in the middle of a desert. And they’d been doing so well too. The whole plan had gone without a hitch until the girl started crying. It was his weakness. He felt sorry for people in trouble. And she took advantage of it. In hindsight, he really shouldn’t have expected anything different from her.

Well, at least they still had Inara as their back-up. Hopefully everything would go shiny that aspect. Inara could take care of herself. Looks like all he could do now was wait for her to get back and then wait for the rest of the crew and his ship to pick them up.

The sun had reached its zenith and passed before Mal started to feel the itching that something had gone wrong. He reached for his communicator before remembering that it wasn’t there. “Liou coe shway duh biao-tze huh hoe-tze duh ur-tze,"* he swore adding, “This is so not good.” It was time to start walking. He’d come up with a plan, he always did.

Mal was more than a little angry by the time a structure showed up on the horizon. “Runtse de fwotzoo”* he exclaimed as he spied it. The building looked run down, but perhaps he could find some clothes and some way to contact his crew. Entering the building, however, he was momentarily stopped by how pristine it was. It had to be alliance, and he was standing in the middle of it stark naked. It looked like it was time to turn around and head back into the desert.

“Captain Reynolds! We’ve been expecting you.”

“Gao yang jong duh goo yang!”* Mal exclaimed turning towards the voice and reaching for his non-existant gun. “You’ve definitely made some sort of mistake,” he managed once realizing he couldn’t shoot the man behind the counter.

“I assure you, there has been no mistake. You see, you are in our register,” the man said in a cool voice. “Here is you key, if you would just sign here.”

“Funny. Seems to me anytime someone signs something for the alliance, bad things happen” Mal retaliated.

The man merely shrugged. “You are a guest anyway. Enjoy your stay,” and he left.

Mal looked after the man, looked at the hotel, then down at his completely unclothed body. “Guay!”*
