new laptop computer specs-what do you think?

My laptop is going on five years come August. It still works great (knock on wood)..only trouble is, it lacks the processing speed and power I need for things like video editing, video capture and anything "heavy duty". In fact, my video editor often "hiccups" when I'm creating vids. Time to look for a more powerful machine, but one that won't ( Read more... )

Being a Mac whore myself I say go Mac, the freedom of knowing no virus, cheap upgrades, the fact that it can ALSO run Windows (my iMac does) and art specialisation out rules everything to me. However I also understand the need of the budget.
I bought my iMac at full price at the store and love it to pieces however I could not justify spending the same amount for a MacBook with half the specs. Now Apple is releasing a new laptop this year and have already announced everything last week which was why the MacBooks weren't as upgraded as their desktop cousins. I still needed a laptop though and so went on eBay and purchased a used MacBook on there for 500.00. It's a 2008 black model and I love it. Original owner, updated to latest OS and has just as much firepower as most PC models. She also had it checked out at a store before shipping it to me which I would have done when it came in had she not.
As for your specs they sound fine. If you decide to go this route and not a Mac one stay with them or look at Vaios or Toshibas. Gateways and ( ... )

Here's the rundown it's a hell of a lot easier to upgrade memory as opposed to changing a processor. Unless you want to take the laptop apart, pull the heatsink, change the chip, reapply compound for heatsink and put the computer back together again (and hope to God you don't fry the system with too much power or worse electric static charge) than I say do the memory yourself ( ... )

Thanks for all that, hon'. I actually did some research before I heard back from you and they said processing speed is more important than RAM as it's the engine that runs things...so I decided to go with the Core i7 and keep the RAM and HD specs to the ( ... )

Incidently yes you are right Macs can get Mac written viruses but there are just not a lot of them out there. What people don't know is that a Mac can't open and run a virus as it doesn't know its there but a Mac CAN pass it on to their PC friends through emails and whatnot and not even realise it. In short Macs are carriers but not infected.

And yeah Macs don't lose their value quickly. My friend sold her 2002 blue Powerbook last year for $110.00 it's amazing how long they hold their value. Trust me when I say though that my 2008 MacBook has the same specs my 2011 Vaio has. Mac is ALWAYS ahead of the curve on huge specs, it takes PC manufactures 2-3 years to catch up to the specs of an older Mac though that divide is getting slimmer as years roll on.
