So, I'm going to take a quick break and give an example of why I love City of Heroes and more importantly, the Virtue server. The ramifications of what is currently happening, when you stop to think about it, is fuel for a paper, if not a thesis. In particular,
kniedzw and
drydem, I think you'll get a kick out of this...
Here is the set-up for you folks that don't play the game. In game there is a small interdimensional pocket that has been used as a danceclub/bar. In this place, heroes and villains come to chill out. Its neutral territory and on the Virtue server it is one of THE places to watch or get involved with the roleplay.
Recently a group of characters, dressed all in special ops gear, have shown up in the bar with the following type of barcode name : IIII II IIII IIIIII III. They run in groups of one or two, stick to the corners, and will occasionally try to prick a hero/villain in order to get a blood sample. If spoken to or private messaged, you will receive the following, "III IIIIII IIII IIIIIIIIIII II III IIIIIIII IIIIIII." Its the only way they communicate. They've been seen doing all sorts of things like trying to get a glass a hero has been drinking from to breaking a needle while trying to stick it through the superhard skin of a Tanker. Fun stuff! At first, everyone just thought it was one guy having some fun but then... it got.... sinister.
Ya see, someone posted on the boards about it recently and everyone realized that not only are there more then one of them, they're organized, AND, they're up to something! The forum post is filled with typical poster insanity but if you read through it, you will see that SOMETHING is going on. Whatever it is, I'm sure its player driven and, quite honestly, I think its fantastic! Go here for the forum thread --->
Forum Thread on the subject. During the forum thread discussion, one of the barcode folks posted in response. And yes, they posted with a hyperlink that was written in the same code. Here is that link...
Creepy link . They've since posted a few other times, also in that same code.
Currently, one person has maybe been able to break the code and one of the translations read,
"Language is a means.
It is not a puzzle,
a game for your easily amused minds.
Our language is not the message.
means to an end."
Other then that, the group is not talking much and those that are curious have little to no idea what is going on.
As far as commentary into social player initiative inside a MMORPG, this is something I think bears watching. Its almost like virutal performance art. I'm reminded of when I played Asheron's Call and got to watch over fifty to a hundred players descend onto a town as "Hill People." All the players involved made crude first level characters. Wearing only fur garments and carrying sticks or crude weapons, they literally horded out of a town and then ran into the town attacking anyone they could see. They managed to take down several high level characters and there was chaos and dead hill people everywhere! They also started doing coordinated attacks on towns and villages. And then, just as it started to get popular, it faded into non-existence. An odd mysterious happening of the MMORPG world.
Anyway, I figured at leat more then one of you would be interested in some nefarious and entertaining things going on in another world not that far away from you...
