since this is the single largest change/update/what-have-you I've ever made to my rather small, cozy f-list, I figured it was probably time to introduce myself, hey!

1.) I actually never dreamed I would go into teaching in any form, I always said I hated children and all... but I was in a pretty bad situation at home, financially and due to family stresses and just really needing to put some distance there that gave me a stable job. I had a friend who had been working in Korea for about 3 years, at the time, and she recommended it due to my interest in Asian languages, Asia in general, and a real job. because I have a university diploma, I was already fully qualified to teach English here, and I made the decision to give it a try. I figured that even if I really hate kids, I can tough it out for a year--but it's been much better (even including the children) than I expected, so I plan to stay longer than a year anyway. I applied directly to an ad a branch had placed, but a majority of people use recruiters, especially their first time in the country. in some ways, communicating with a non-native speaker (the director of my branch) made the application and arrival process more stressful than it needed to be, but I made it here in the end safely, so it worked out alright. my first night, I got off the plane, navigated myself onto the shuttle bus and into Seoul, got off, met my director, and was taken on an absolutely dizzying car ride through a tangle of one way streets until he showed me my apartment, hopped back in the car, showed me my office, and ran me back home to sleep while I was still completely in a fog from the plane ride. then, I had a week of training (two weeks actually, because I didn't pass the first time --;).
