Arranging a field trip for 76 first graders to the Oregon Zoo by myself is quickly becoming tiring. My little teaching team have totally slacked off in the area of "team." I took today off as a sick day to nurse my budding allergies and to just rest before the real on-slaught of end of the year work.
One of my students told me the greatest story yesterday. All of the kids were busy working on various things in the classroom- either reading quietly, reading to a partner, or working on this sequencing poster for a story we read. During this, I hear one of my little first graders say that he saw a girl get kidnapped. I called him over to my desk. This is the story he told:
"Well, there was this little village and it had these people in it. And guess what? Smurfette was taken from the village with all the little blue people in it. And guess what? She was taken to this guy's house. You know the guy with the black hair and the big nose? And he has the mean cat? Well, he kidnapped Smurfette. But guess what? The other Smurfs rescued her. And then she got to go back home."
I tried, unsuccessfully, to keep a straight face during this tale. Later, the same student told me he was tired because "Guess what? There was a disaster at my house last night!" (ie, he fell asleep with his tv on and was too tired to get up and turn it off; instead he just kept waking up all night).
Kevin and I watched a great movie about the Korean War last week. Tae Guk Gi.
