Summary: They had come out to this pier countless times, but this time she was alone.
We had come out to this pier countless times, but now I was alone.
I sighed, walking slowly towards the sunset. The lake was perfectly calm. It was off season, and quite early in the afternoon because the sun was setting so early these days. It was chilly out on the lake, but I barely felt it.
It seemed like just yesterday that he was here beside me, sitting with his arm around me on the edge of the pier. "We could stay here forever," he'd said.
"No we can't," I'd argued. "We have to go back to the city tonight."
He knew I was right. He'd offered to drive and I was glad to have the chance to rest. I'd been feeling so tired.
It was the last trip we'd ever take.
They never did find the illness within me before it was too late. One day, I just didn't get out of bed. It was that simple. I looked out over the lake. Now I could stay here forever, but I didn't want to. Not without him.
I heard footsteps behind me and quickly turned around. It was him. I knew he'd come out here one last time to say goodbye. He couldn't hide his tears as the sun slid behind the horizon.
