Dean started sulking; for some reason Dean was a bigger cock-block as a five year old than he ever had been as an adult. He was possessive of Sam's attention and didn't want his brother to date. To be fair his worries had been well-founded when a date of Sam's, a precious night away from the little ones (Charlie babysat) with a woman he met on the internet, had gone badly when she turned out to be a witch seeking revenge... but that was one singular date. It was the first one Sam had been on in ages and didn't he deserve that much at least?
“I hope the other kids are nice,” said Cas, “I want to make some friends. I don't have any... except you guys and Gabe.”
Gabriel was, much to Sam's frustration and amusement, Castiel's imaginary friend.
“Do they have a sandbox? I think I heard Connor say there was a sandbox with dinosaurs... I hope so, I love dinosaurs. Brontosaurus is my favourite, what about yours?”
“T-rex,” said Dean.
“Did you know dinosaur means terrible lizard in Latin?” said Cas, “I remember how to speak Latin, but I'm out of practice. Quis non ad cum latina.”
Cas was a talkative child and the thirty-five minute walk to the school passed quickly. For some kids their age this may have been a long walk, but they were energetic and used to it because Sam had been taking them to the school playground a few days a week most of the summer to allow them to burn off energy and socialize, that was where they met Connor, a boy a year older than them.

The school was just around the corner. They rounded the bend and then the building came into view, a low brick structure circa 1982 with barred windows slightly reminiscent of a prison or asylum, though the happy coloured paper leaves in the windows helped brighten it.
Ms Roslyn greeted them at the door. She had received a letter informing her that Dean Winchester and Castiel Campbell would be joining her this year and they may have some emotional difficulties while adjusting as the cousins had both lost their parents in a car accident five months ago. Angela Campbell, a single mother, had been travelling with her sister, Mary Winchester, and Mary's husband when another vehicle had lost control and struck their car from the side, driving it into an oncoming bus. All passengers had been killed instantly. Dean had been, the letter explained, a late surprise for the Winchesters so their older son, Sam, was old enough that he now found himself the legal guardian of both boys. The whereabouts of Castiel's father were unknown. In fact, he'd been babysitting the boys when the accident had occurred. Castiel remained fearful of vehicles and all toy cars had been removed from the classroom prior to his arrival, to be reintroduced later, after sufficient sessions with the school counsellor.
Ms Roslyn was indeed very pretty, a short woman in her late thirties wearing a vintage-inspired dress and horn-rimmed glasses, her curly hair hardly contained in a high, loose bun... yes, all very much Sam's type.
Dean scowled as he approached and she smiled sweetly, “You must be Sam Winchester? And these little guys would be Dean and Castiel?”
“We are, Ms Roslyn I assume?” Sam shook her hand warmly, “We just call him Cas at home.”
“Hello Cas, Dean,” she introduced herself, “You can call me Ms Roslyn.”
Dean continued to scowl but Cas grinned broadly and ran into the classroom's entrance-room. “Go ahead and pick out a peg to hang up your backpack, today we'll be making name tags for your pegs and for your desks.”
Other children were arriving and Ms Roslyn continued to greet parents and direct the children inside. “I don't have much time to talk to you I'm afraid, but I did get the notice about Dean and Cas, poor dears... do you think they'll be okay alone today? We usually don't allow guardians to stay on the first day, it sets a bad precedent, but given what they've been through...”
Sam glanced to where Dean and Cas were picking out pegs next to each other and Cas was already talking excitedly with a cute little Hispanic girl, “You know what? I think they'll be fine. You should have my cell as an emergency contact so I can be here quickly if there are any problems, I work from home.”
“Sounds good,” Ms Roslyn nodded and went into the classroom to start her day.

At 2pm, an hour earlier than the other children got out, the kindergarten class let their captives free. Two dozen little balls of excitement rushed out of the room into the yard where parents were already milling around.
“How did they do?” Sam asked Ms Roslyn when she was free of other parents who were no doubt asking the same question of their own little angels, “They did fine. Cas got a little quiet and looked upset when another boy took out his Cars lunchbox but Dean quickly distracted him. They have one another to help them through the tragedy and that makes all the difference in the world.”
“They help me too,” said Sam, “I've been too busy to get lost in grief. You sound like you speak from experience...”
“I... oh. I guess... I...” she wondered at how Sam had inferred that from her tone, “My daughter and I... I lost my husband about half a year ago. This is my first semester back.”
“I'm sorry to hear. How old is your girl?”
“Thirteen. She acts like she's taking it well but I can tell she's hurting. I hear her talking to him still. Some nights I swear I hear him talking back, but that's not possible of course, just the mind playing tricks.”
“Sometimes we hear what we want to hear,” agreed Sam, not quite believing it himself; something about the way she sounded like she was struggling to convince herself that she wasn't hearing her dead husband was setting off haunted warning bells.
Just then Den and Cas came out to greet Sam. Cas reached out for a hug, and started babbling excitedly, “There's a sandbox loaded with dinosaurs and we're allowed to play with it as long as we want during free hour! It's so cool, the sand is red, and there are rocks made out of lava, igneous rocks, all full off little holes.”
“I take it you enjoyed your first day?” Sam chuckled, hugging Cas and patting Dean on the head before taking both boys by the hands and setting off for home. He turned back to nod at Ms Roslyn who was already busy with another parent.
“Yep,” said Dean.
“Did you make any friends?”
“I did!” said Cas, “Her name is Maria, and Liam too, he just moved here and he's really cool, his dad is a pilot!”
“The teacher's house is haunted,” said Dean.
“How do you know that?” asked Sam.
“I was heard you talking to her and some of the stuff she said in class... just little things... she's tired and distracted. We should help her.”
“So we should do a ghost hunt?”
“Yep,” Dean nodded, “Old fashioned salt 'n burn prolly.”
“Okay, sounds good. How should we begin?” Sam asked. It was a bit of like old times, planning a hunt with his brother, Castiel tagging along, only this time they'd probably need a nap when they got home before they could start planning. Oh yeah, just like old times.

Oh, this was awesome! I feel bad that it took me so long to comment on it. I read it this morning right before work, and then never had a chance to come back and say anything about it.

But I loved the way you wrote it -- Cas's enthusiasm and excitement about everything, and Dean being a little more reserved and quiet. And their personalities, that are just a little bit more adult than regular kids. I can just imagine Cas rambling on and on about all the things he knows. And “Old fashioned salt 'n burn prolly.”? Probably my new favorite sentence. Little five-year-old Dean planning hunting strategies. Awwww.

...I kind of want to see more of these guys. (psst! What if maybe one night there's a really bad thunderstorm, and Dean is maybe a little scared, but he'll never admit it?) :D

Anyway, great job! Loved it!

Glad you enjoyed it, there's something super cute about de-aged Winchesters, and of course Cas being a loveable little weirdo. <3 <3 <3
