Dear Sanford J. Ungar,
I am paying upwards of $5,750 (more because I live in a single, in an apartment) for my room on Probst One here at Goucher. It is not air conditioned; the stove doesn't work properly; when the heater works, it leaves us boiling alive. When I first got here, it took almost a week to get internet up and running because our connection is so bad. Unfortunately, this is not the worst of the problems. The apartment is also infested with bugs. Now, we keep it as clean as can be expected from extremely busy college students-- it is by no means spic and span, but my room is much cleaner than the one I lived in last year (on many levels), and this year there have been far more problems. We have had:
-two gigantic spiders, one black and in our bathtub, the other brown and in the living room- both hairy, both scary
-one cockroach
-FOUR instances of ant infestations: one in the commons area, one in my room, one in the bathroom, and one in the double
-several smaller spiders, waterbugs, etc in my room and in the bathroom
-one huge cave cricket (also known as camelback crickets, "sprickets", creepy-cricket-spider-things, etc), found coming in under my doorway from the kitchen.
Residence Life has come in and put bug spray down twice since midterms because it has gotten so bad. FMS had to re-seal our bathtub to keep the ants out the other day. We do not keep food near the floor, generally, and as I said, are not all that messy. The apartment is not properly sealed off in a number of locations; for what we paid for this room, it's absolutely ridiculous. I, for one, will consider relocating to a different room if I can find one, in the event that this does not get fixed.
The older dorms are in terrible need of rennovation- I know of similar problems (if not worse) in Mary Fisher Hall as well as Froelicher. I suggest you stop worrying so much about getting students here and start being more concerned with creating an architecturally sound, well-sealed, safe living space for those of us who are already attending Goucher. Nobody should be paying what we pay for dorms like this one, with problems that could be fixed with a little more attention.
Sincerely,
=A=
