According to the gent that did the survey there is a spot on the roof that would be hidden from everywhere in our community. Heck, apparently the builder didn't even bother to finish painting that area since it is hidden from view. The only spot it would be visible would be the apartment complex directly behind us. The mindset is that people have is that the HOA and the assorted regs are there to Protect Property Values. I'm not sure if that is correct or not considering the stories those usually refer to (i.e. dead car repository in suburbia) would usually fall under local zoning ordinances. Now they simply seem to be there to ensure that everyone looks the same on the outside. Any break in uniformity is considered Bad For Property Values because it is different.
*sigh*
Most of the blame goes to the developers and builders for setting it up in the first place. They want a uniform look while building and selling the community and then the buyers are stuck with it long after.
