[It's been a while for her that she's been up.]

They're spirits or deities in my world. There are some that are universal--Amaterasu the Sun Goddess and Susanou the Storm God, for examples--but others are local and attributed as the spirits of things that appear to be especially holy. It's part of the Shinto religion.

But there are also Buddhists, who invoke no specific god, but Buddha, who was a monk that a achieved a great deal of holiness.
