The Chestnut Saga, Part II

Dec 17, 2005 23:54

So I still don't know what exactly is the deal with this chestnut. I tried climbing it today, when I got into a staring contest with the resident of a nearby house. Awkward. One way or another, dendrology will cause my death or arrest.

Burrs on the ground look like Castanea mollissima, Chinese Chestnut. Leaves are like an integrade between C. dentata and C. mollissima. Twigs undetermined since I haven't climbed that high yet. Nuts unobserved, since squirrels have gone through all the fallen burrs already. Most likely a Chinese one, I guess, though the blight seems severe for a Chinese or Japanese tree. It could be Henry's Chestnut, but I've never heard of that being planted before.

Next step: commando tree climbing expedition under cover of darkness, to avoid drawing the unwanted eye of homeowners.
