I'm reading a book called Empire of the Ants. I finished a book called Japanese Fairy Tales that was translated into English in 1910-something. One fairy tale was about a badger who tricked a man into eating his wife (that's not a euphemism), so the rabbit set the badger on fire and then let him drown. Another was about a mountain monkey that bashed a crab to death with unripe persimmons so everyone got together to immobilize him (somewhat graphically) so the crab's son could snip the monkey's head off. Almost all of them started with an old couple who treated an animal like a kid (except for one where the old woman found a large peach and when she and her husband went to eat it, they found a baby inside who then went on to kick ogre ass except the animals he enslaved along the way did all the fighting). The copy of the book I was reading was from the 1930s. The punctuation was crappy, and the illustrations were sometimes placed in such a way that the event they showed was on the page after it, so I was spoiled for the climax. But it was a quick read and they were kind of interesting.
