For a while when Shelby was two or three whenever Jason would come into the room she would leave it. My (and my uncle's) private conclusion was that at some point Jason did something that was pretty fucking mean to her. He would say, "This dog hates me!" and someone else would say, "So be nicer to her!"

Then he started playing with her. And he couldn't just throw her ball or play tug with her rope. He would only play rough. Which has always meant that he would antagonize her and she would nip and lunge at him until he ran away. He gets down on his knees and puts his head on the ground, curls up and lets her have at him. And yeah she would growl.

She's still only territorial when she's laying down and she's most aggressive to him. Perhaps because over the years she's deduced that it's okay?

She nipped him again tonight, and he showed me. I understand why Mom called it a paper cut before.

He's such a pussy. "OMG IT GUSHES WHEN I PRESS ON THE SKIN AROUND IT THINGS THAT LOOK LIKE PAPER CUTS DON'T DO THAT!"

Every paper cut I've ever had has done exactly that. I'm not excusing her behavior but. But it looks like a paper cut. You could say it looks like a needle prick, except the blood is a lighter shade of red than when I stab myself trying to sew a button. *koff*

Okay. I really believe that if she wanted to rip his hand off, she could. I don't think she's so domesticated that she couldn't.

Like 20 minutes later he came back down stairs and was calm enough to joke about it. He said something about biting her the next time she tries to bite him. I remember our first dog was an evil little shit because Adam played rough with him all the time and I guess I tried to act like him and I couldn't handle it. One day he nipped at Adam and Adam bit him back. The dog didn't try that again.

So I started explaining this to Jason, about how maybe it could work possibly. But then I remembered who I was talking to. He'd probably take it too far (because he always does, he's one of those people who wants to discipline a dog five hours after whatever they did wrong when he's getting the story second hand). I said it out loud, too, and Jason said probably he would.

But the playing rough realization hit me when he came down the second time and I was laying on the floor petting her. He knelt down and made the same quick movements he always does when he's going to play rough with her, so she lunged and nipped like she always does and always has (never once drew blood while doing it, though, or ever hurt anyone), tail wagging like crazy all the time. And he whipped back and hit her. Really fucking hard he hit her.

And okay. That hurts me. She was reeling and cowering for a minute there--I swear to you--and she's like my baby. But fine if he's going to keep this up he needs to be consistent. Right?
