Cosmic Rockery

I'm going to try to update more often in order to keep my brain functioning even though I'm pretty sure I'm down to 5 or fewer readers at this point. Let's see if I can write a couple of paragraphs every day for a month.

So yeah, as you might have guessed from yesterday's obituary, it's been a rough couple of weeks. Scooter was supposed to recover from his molar trim and gain his weight back, but he didn't; he lost even more weight. After the first emergency vet appointment I started hand-feeding him every four hours, even getting up a few times in the middle of the night to give him his food and medicine. No improvement. Went back to the vet again - got prescribed stronger medicine. Nothing worked; he got worse. At the 3rd vet visit they gave him an ultrasound and discovered that he had cancer and there was nothing we could do. I've seen him make miraculous recoveries before, but this time he was just too old and too sick. Ever since his first tooth problem a year and a half ago I've been preparing for this and speculating about what Scooter's last day on earth would be like. I had grandiose visions of taking him to his ancestral home in the Andes and setting him free. Of course that never happened. He ended up in a hospital on life support like everyone else. Still, I like to imagine him on a mountain in South America, surrounded by volcanic dust and all of his favorite foods, reunited with his brother Skeeter.

Anyway, what's with all the squirrel craziness lately? Last week I found a tiny baby squirrel crawling around in my yard, being closely watched by a neighbor cat. Don't worry, it's safe at Wildlife Rescue now. The next day I found a full grown dead squirrel in my rain gutter. Yesterday a small squirrel snuck into my office nonchalantly as if he belonged there, and then another squirrel stole one of our kitchen towels and absconded up a tree with it. It must be one of those squirrel explosions that happens every 4-5 years. Either that or a climate change thing that we'll have to adapt to.
