1 We went to Egypt in December 2008 and it was sunbathing warm during the day and light sweater at night. We went with a group for Jim's 40th so we were there to party rather than absorb culture, so we went to Sharm and did some diving too. I think it's also a good time to go if you do want to see the pyramids, though, as it's hard work due to the heat in summer. We did an all-inclusive to make life easy in the group, but only after I did a lot of research to find a good one. None of use were sick, the food was fine, it was quiet so there were plenty of sunbeds and a good time was had by all.
2 Sadly it's a negative suggestion, but I would no longer touch Dell with a bargepole. We had a laptop from them several years ago and had no end of trouble with it, but their customer service was superb and they ended up replacing it with a newer model for free. In light of that we decided to buy Dell again this time. What we didn't know is they've since changed their call centre from Ireland to elsewhere in the world and, at the same time, massively lost quality and completely changed their attitude for the worst. Now their sole aim when we call up with hardware issues (we bought a service package) is to prove that it's software problems, as they're not obliged to fix that, even if it is blatantly hardware. They're also incredibly rude on occasion and we dread anything going wrong because it's such a stressful, negative experience when we contact them. Needless to say we'll buy elsewhere next time.
I would note that I have heard uniform and very negative comments regarding Egypt from the women I know who have been there, to the effect that irrespective of dress and presence of male escort a women will be subject to what at best could be termed unwelcome attention and in practice is nearer outright sexual harassment.
Five Western women journalists have been raped since the beginning of the Tahrir Square protests. Alas, I would advise anyone to give Egypt a miss now.
I went in April/May 2011. We had a wonderful time - I did dress conservatively and we were fully guided the whole time - I don't know whether that makes a difference? I don't think I would have felt comfortable if we had been on our own - particularly in Cairo or Luxor, BUT it is an amazing country.
